Fiona likes to paw at the edge of whatever blanket I'm under until I raise it enough for her to crawl in. Then she shreds my skin in joyful abandon, making biscuits on my abdomen. She's a small cat, but she has a loud, rumbly purr.

Dad and I had been making do in this heat with fans and spray bottles. 100F highs today and yesterday finally got me doing maintenance on my air conditioner. It's too small for the apartment, but it does well in my room. Five minutes after I turned it on, Dad camped out on my bed with his Kindle.

A beautiful little spider and I scared the hell out of each other when I was in the shower. I noticed something extra on the comb I use, I squawked, and it landed on the shower floor. I put it on the toilet lid, and when I got out, it hid from me between the lid and the seat. Poor wee babe!

As I walked back after running a work errand, I saw a heron at a reflecting pool. Not sure what species, but it was grey and white, maybe a meter tall. I told it to try the Nature Center across town for better foraging, but it just looked at me like I'm crazy. It has a point; I talk to birds.

I noticed yesterday when the phone rang that caller ID said "private" for both name and number. The caller is a regular customer; she's polite but unpleasant to deal with in every other way. I get why her caller ID says that, because no one would pick up their phone if they could see it's her.

A joyful moment this evening, even though it's 85F an hour after sunset: Dad's in his car with the air conditioning. Apartments 7 and 8 are empty. Next-door building is being tented for pests. There is no one to see me on my patio, watering my plants in my bra and underwear.
