The new Renoir show at the National Gallery is really something Self-knowingly idealistic, ethereal, capturing ephemeral everyday moments for eternity Sure, when he was off, he was off, but the highs are so high as to be otherworldly As for Bal du moulin de la Galette, I could gaze at it forever

This seems like a completely mad thing for the BBC to do. Children generally do not get into history because of the worthy, noble, or inspiring stories. Hearing about blood & guts really does not set them up for problems in later life.

This some advanced tankie "thought". Russia has a UNSC seat & world's largest amounts of land, gas, oil and NUKES. Russia also has no agency over our own actions and so cannot be held accountable and therefore must be excused and appeased.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

Damning silence from Labour on their Napoleon III exhumation policy
Tom Harwood tweets:

BREAK: Nigel Farage says under a Reform government the body of Napoleon III could be returned from England to France.
The last French emperor's final resting place is in The Imperial Crypt at St Michael's Abbey in Farnborough.
He died in exile in England in 1873 following the fall of the Second Empire. His body was never returned to France because they didn't want it, and due to his wife's wishes. She was later buried alongside him.

On the one hand, a lot of Poland's promotional campaigns always feel as though they are talking to other Poles & it's often Poles themsleves who talk about them. On the other, international coverage often appears to be selective, misrepresentative, & designed to address its own specific interests.
