Thread: Two different versions of this AI-generated image purporting to show President Trump and his assistant Natalie Harp kissing went viral this week, generating millions of views across multiple platforms. Despite being fake, this wasn't a straightforward AI image to debunk. I'll explain why.

Anybody who’s still advocating putting these tools anywhere near a school is not doing so despite the cognitive collapse they cause, but because of it. dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...
Abstract
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative Al affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine monthly closed-book exams, high-school and college entrance exams, and homework scores and completion time across nine subjects. We exploit staggered Al adoption in a difference-in-differences design. Al adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months.
High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys. The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of Al users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. Al users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-Al users experience small learning losses.

Yes, a lot of potentially beneficial government policies run the risk of empowering bad actors if control of the government ever falls to them. And, yes, if we accept this as an argument to not do things then we will often get nothing done.

Wait, hold up, I'm sorry - the actual data supporting the conclusions of your 'academia is politicized and not data-based enough' report may or may not be published at some point? Proof is for the peasants at public universities, I guess.
Len Gutkin: One of the criticisms that you’ve gotten is that the report offers conclusions, but the bulk of the evidence is buried in the “detailed internal reports” that were compiled but which haven’t been published or released. Will they be published?

Appiah: The decision was made to allow the authors of those internal reports to decide whether or not to make them public. They were the basis of our deliberation. I will make mine, which is about literary criticism, public at some point, and I think others will. But on the whole, I think it was right to do it the way we have, because we need people to think about the main conclusions and the main arguments, which are in this document.

Sonyon, Saint of inventors, technicians, and artificers. That you pray to for a flash of something extraordinary to change the world. That your invention will work and not kill you in the process. That no one uses what you've made for terrible things. #myart #dnd #d&d
A digital illustration of the stained glass shrine to the fictional patron saint of techs, inventors and artificers, Sonyon, from my D&D campaign. Set into cracked red stone, the arched window shows a man with a mechanical prosthetic leg stepping up, holding a large wrench aloft. It’s both triumphant and feels like a prayer. His head is haloed by the green rays of the lighthouse his legend says he built. With his other hand, he pulls his chest open, revealing a series of gears. Behind him are circles depicting mechanical blueprint drawings. In the back are the buildings a desert city in front of a red wall and purple mountains. Below the window in the stone the word “Sonyon” is carved in a fictional language.
