My cats are frat boys. They pester you for pets because you pet them that one time, they think everyone wants to give them pets, every once in awhile they get the zoomies and break things, and they get really happy when you give them food.

Thread: Two different versions of this AI-generated image purporting to show President Trump and his assistant Natalie Harp kissing went viral this week, generating millions of views across multiple platforms. Despite being fake, this wasn't a straightforward AI image to debunk. I'll explain why.

My five year old says it really matters that he’s first. First to the car. The bathroom. The table. First is first! Sadly I cannot persuade him that there are separate divisions for sex assigned at both, so he wants to beat his sister.

Anybody who’s still advocating putting these tools anywhere near a school is not doing so despite the cognitive collapse they cause, but because of it. dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...
Abstract
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative Al affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine monthly closed-book exams, high-school and college entrance exams, and homework scores and completion time across nine subjects. We exploit staggered Al adoption in a difference-in-differences design. Al adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months.
High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys. The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of Al users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. Al users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-Al users experience small learning losses.

There are four overlapping scandals here: 1. Fundraising spam tactics are hallmarks of elder financial exploitation 2. The Dem establishment is in on it 3. Most of what is raised goes to fundraising consultants 4. Capitulation to legal threats by NYT and The Bulwark on a fully vetted story 🧵👇

This is why it is important to consider whether we should rationally fear authoritarianism in the present day. Because a country in which fear of authoritarianism is rational cannot have many nice things. Given the current state of checks and balances...err, ouch.

Yes, a lot of potentially beneficial government policies run the risk of empowering bad actors if control of the government ever falls to them. And, yes, if we accept this as an argument to not do things then we will often get nothing done.
