Morning! I did a lil analysis and turns out that, when ED employees are illegally fired and contracts are canceled, ED is unable to fulfill its congressional mandate to publish national statistics on the condition of education. Why does that matter? Well... www.brookings.edu/articles/the...
Screenshot of policy brief that reads: This delay (or outright refusal) to compile a robust COE weakens our nation’s ability to accurately assess the current condition of education and the progress we have made. Policy actors such as the Congressional Research Service use Digest tables. Scholars leverage the COE to explain in policy briefs the effects of K-12 class-size reduction policies or whether an “enrollment cliff” actually looms for higher education. The press also uses this data to help the public understand issues like the rise in total cost of attendance at colleges and universities or challenges in the teacher labor market in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I'm teaching Ed Policy for Teacher Leaders this summer. I'm inheriting the wonderful Dr. Farley-Ripple's materials, but they're several years old. What should I include in my refresh, particularly in these times? Academic articles welcomed, but also videos, practitioner-facing articles, etc. please!

New from Jen Darling-Aduana, @dave-woo.bsky.social, and me: We observed lessons in an online charter school to understand instructional quality. Despite the school's marketing as an innovative, tailored alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar publics, teachers' instruction rarely reflected this.

Seems to me what we’re seeing across the federal government are the dividends being paid from years of adopting market language to talk about public goods. Run government like a business? Businesses exist to make profit. Government exists to serve the people. We’re about to see the difference now.

this from a representative at American Institutes for Research about DOGE/Trump cancelling IES contracts is spot on (& good on them for speaking out clearly about this)
“This is an incredible waste of taxpayer dollars, which have been invested—per Congressional appropriations and many according to specific legislation—in long-standing data collection and analysis efforts, and policy and program evaluations,” Tofig said. “These investments inform the entire education system at all levels about the condition of education and the distribution of students, teachers, and resources in school districts across America. Many of these contracts are nearing completion and canceling them now yields the taxpayers no return on their investment. If the purpose of such cuts is to make sure taxpayer dollars are not wasted and used well, the evaluation and data work that has been terminated is exactly the work that determines which programs are effective uses of federal dollars, and which are not.”

This from @jonathanecollins.bsky.social looks great. Folks support teaching core ideas from Critial Race Theory—that racism is structural (and bad)—but oppose teaching “CRT” because policy makers tarnished the brand. This has broad implications beyond the case. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Oh yay, this paper is finally out at AERA Open! journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
Screenshot of the top of the article. Title is Racial Category Usage in Education Research: Examining the Publications from AERA Journals. Authors are Dominique J Baker, Karly S Ford, Samantha Viano, and Marc P Johnston-Guerrero. Abstract reads: How scholars name different racial groups has powerful salience for understanding what researchers study. We explored how education researchers used racial terminology in recently published high-profile peer-reviewed studies. Our sample included 1,427 original empirical studies published in the nonreview AERA journals from 2009 to 2019. We found that two thirds of articles used at least one racial category term, with an increase from about half to almost three quarters of published studies between 2009 and 2019. Other trends include the increasing popularity of the term Black, the emergence of gender-expansive terms such as Latinx, the popularity of the term Hispanic in quantitative studies, and the paucity of studies with terms connoting missing race data or including terms describing Indigenous and multiracial peoples.
