I am thrilled to share that the first article from my diss has been published & is open access. The paper explores the admin burdens that families of children with disabilities incur as they work to realize their children's civil rights to a public education. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/...
This is a screenshot of the article citation, title, author, abstract and keywords. That information is: “You Have to Stay on Top of It”: Parents’ Experiences of Administrative Burdens in Special EducationJennifer R. Cowhyhttps://orcid.org/0000-0002-4745-5091AbstractIn this qualitative interview study with a diverse group of 60 parents, I argue that parents perform administrative work to implement special education (SE). I leverage a conceptual framework that brings together administrative burdens theory with the concept of organizational fields to better understand how parents experience administrative costs to realize and enforce their child’s rights. I find that all parents experienced numerous compliance, learning, and psychological costs. Additionally, Parents of (Children of) Color experienced racialized burdens, which contributed additional direct costs and compounded other costs that Families of Color incurred. https://doi.org/10.3102/01623737251378492

"The facts of American history have in the last half century been falsified because the nation was ashamed. The South was ashamed because it fought to perpetuate human slavery. The North was ashamed because it had to call in the black men to save the Union, abolish slavery and establish democracy."

I am in my 10th hour of editing my book manuscript - my eyes are blurry - I'm losing focus. And so, I bring you these quotes from W.E.B. Du Bois' "Black Reconstruction in America" (1935) I have also been thinking about all day:

This means so much, particularly when SE policy & SWDs are under such real threat. Sharing this with @mayakaul.bsky.social, whose dedication and brilliant scholarship on the teaching profession are so important at this time, makes this award even more special. I'm so grateful and honored. 🙏Div L!

And after you're done checking out my new pub, check out this incredibly important and timely piece from @drmcquillan.bsky.social. This paper helps spell out how and why leaders fail to do the right thing. Implications for how those of us in ed ldrshp can support them to support our students.

Last week, Black community members at the University of Michigan shared their stories. A long thread, because there were a lot of them, and they can make you weep.

Got rejected from a special issue today. Womp womp. But the feedback was positive and really, it made all the difference. Just here trying to normalize rejection and to remind folks that we can all be kind with our criticism and feedback to help better the work. It makes a HUGE difference.

His supporters don't fear him, because they don't believe government can accomplish anything (good or bad). All they really want is someone to blame for their problems, and he gives them plenty of names.
