If “trump held a gun to our head” is true then they can say so under oath
“We don’t want to turn into a banana republic where you lose an election and it’s all about retribution,” said Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.), a senior member of the Financial Services Committee. “A lot of the companies did things because Trump had a gun on their head. We’re going to have to be a little bit wise about when companies simply did something they had to do to survive this unprecedented level of corruption, compared to companies that actually got on board and profited more by being a partner in his corruption.”

This is so damning. Bill Foster doesn’t seem to understand what a banana republic is or what the whole point of bribes are.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Watching “Ghost In The Shell.” Given how much the tech elite want to make cyberpunk a reality, it’s amazing how little internal lives they have. This is such an introspective genre, deeply concerned with the question of what makes us human. But nvm, cool guns and computers, pew pew

Polarization is the immune response to an unpopular, antidemocratic, & intentionally divisive faction grabbing for disproportionate power to the detriment of national success, reputation, & democratic self-government. Tamping down that immune response only allows this faction greater control.“

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

Our system makes it back-breakingly difficult to ever enact a law, and all but impossible when the electeds are near-equally divided into diametrically opposed camps. People understandably conflate "nothing ever happens" with "no one wants anything to happen," but the issue is often more systemic.

"Kalshi adds new Dem firepower
By DANIEL BARNES 07/17/2026 06:00 PM EDT
With help from Daniel Lippman

Kalshi has hired a formidable team of Democratic lobbyists with FTP, adding to the prediction market’s Washington roster as it works to keep a sports contract ban out of a digital asset market structure bill and prepares for potential Democratic control of the House in 2027.

— FTP partners Libby Greer, Cindy Brown, Michael Williams, Kelley Williams and Trevor Hanger started representing Kalshi on July 1, according to a disclosure report filed yesterday. The team, which includes two former House chiefs of staff, will lobby on “issues related to legislation governing regulation of prediction markets.”

— Kalshi has been steadily building a bipartisan presence in Washington. In the first half of 2026, the company hired Biden administration alum John Bivona as head of federal government relations, Obama alum Stephanie Cutter of Precision Strategies as a policy adviser and Senate Republican Cloakroom veteran Tony Hanagan as head of congressional affairs. Kalshi has been a frequent customer on K Street as well, hiring six new lobbyists from Squire Patton Boggs and Resolution Public Affairs just this year."
