There's currently a lot of talk about the record-breaking El Niño (dubbed a 'super' El Niño by some). Our climate experts have looked at evidence from 35 years of satellite observations which suggests El Niño may have partly amplified the severity of Europe’s extreme summer this year bit.ly/4yyUSHb

Thanks for the explanation. regardless of the averaging period it seems like the OISSTv2 temp was a bit higher than the other dataset in the past months.

Wading into the "relative versus absolute" El Niño intensity debate: I genuinely think both are important--and I think we lose important information if we focus solely on one vs another. And both, as of late Sep, have now reached or exceeded record levels! [Thread]
Plot by Daniel Swain showing temporal evolution of ONI vs RONI index during 2026, representing two different ways to visualize El Nino intensity. The ONI has been at record levels since May, and the RONI has been at near-record levels since June. Data directly from NOAA.

With all the September runs of dynamic ENSO models now in (with the exception of SINTEX), we are even more likely to see a record-setting (or even record-shattering) event this year. Most models revised their projection upward, a few downward, and a few unchanged:

With the help of new photo material, we were able to upgrade the Ohrdruf #tornado of 19 August 2026 to IF3. This makes it the first IF3 tornado in Germany since Bützow (5 May 2015). Since 2000, only nine IF3 tornadoes have been recorded in Germany. (Photo credits: Stefan Schambach, Ohrdruf)

How much of the May–July 2026 temperatures in Europe was related to El Niño? Here's comparison of 1979–2025 correlation map and detrended temperatures for MJJ 2026. Not a perfect match, but not bad either. Especially the east-west gradient across Europe is consistent with the El Niño pattern.
A map showing the correlation coefficient between CPC relative ONI index and 2-m temperatures for MJJ 1979–2025. Weak positive correlation in western Europe and stronger negative correlation in eastern Europe.Detrended temperature anomaly for MJJ 2026. Hot in western Europe and cooler in eastern Europe.

The #tornado outbreak on 19.08.2026 was a day to remember with a classic setup (High shear low CAPE, HSLC). SRH was high and also concentrated on the lowest km. In addition LCL were low.

One of the main reasons why the Mediterranean Sea has warmed particularly rapidly in recent years - faster than almost all other ocean regions. And the aerosol effect has likely not yet fully manifested itself.

The #heat is coming to an end across much of Central Europe. This is now consistently simulated by all models. But it's unclear whether the heat will return in August, or if there will be enough rain. However, the trend toward wetter and cooler conditions is clearly evident.
