After many attempts, CNES's Pléiades satellites finally captured a clear-sky view of the source area of the devastating flood in Nepal. The images show the steep landslide scar near the glacier and the huge deposits in the proglacial valley... More here: www.cesbio.cnrs.fr/multitemp/cl...

First global temperature analyses for September 2026 are in. Despite unusually cold Greenland and Antarctica, JMA reanalysis (1991–2020 baseline) ranks it 3rd warmest, while CFSR (baseline 1981-2010) ranks it 2nd warmest. September 2023 was definitely warmer.

On Wednesday September 2026 ends and was significantly warmer than usual across Europe! September 2023 was locally even warmer, but 2026 is so far the warmest calendar year on record in places such as Zurich, Switzerland.

Record-low water level at Lake Constance in Bregenz, Austria, this morning – in a 161-year measurement series! And there is little relief in sight: all weather models indicate virtually no precipitation over the next 10 days!

After a record-breaking summer, the first half of the first autumn month was once again much too warm and much too dry across western and southern Europe. (by JMA)

While the tropical Atlantic remains a ghost town, MTG imagery shows an impressive thunderstorm cluster over the southern Mediterranean with potential for a “Medicane”! Some ECMWF members deepen it to 988 hPa within 48h: severe weather (flooding, storm) first for Malta, later Libya and Greece.

There is finally a potential for a hurricane or strong tropical cyclone east of North America — but it’s in the Mediterranean. There’s been a growing signal among ensembles for a medicane, or subtropical/tropical cyclone in the Mediterranean, that may develop this week.

The North Pole still has 24-hour daylight, but the Sun is only ~5° above the horizon. Net radiation will turn negative in the coming days; polar night begins around 24 September. A buoy at 89.223°N (86 km from the Pole) reports −3°C, likely deployed by KV Svalbard in late August.

Today, 10 September, marks the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. Yet there are no named storms, tropical depressions or credible disturbances, with little activity expected soon due to record wind shear and hot, dusty Saharan air. Perhaps end of September...

With abundant sunshine (MTG, 11 UTC) and warm air from Spain and the Canary Islands (backward trajectories), Zurich once again exceeds 30°C today. A sharp drop follows on Wednesday with an active cold front. Probably the last heat: the latest 30°C day was 20 Sep 1947. Next chance: mid-April 2027 :-)

Once again, a sunny and warm summer Sunday in the Alps — seen by NOAA-20 at ~12 UTC. But wildfires are burning in southeastern Europe, especially Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and northwestern Greece. The smoke is also captured by the CAMS model and will spread only locally.

Volcanoe Anak Krakatau is making headlines today with volcanic ash reaching almost FL500 (~15 km)! But smoke is an even bigger issue in parts of Malaysia, where haze from Indonesian forest fires has triggered an emergency. Prolonged drought linked to the strong El Niño is worsening the fires.

A thunderstorm cluster off West Africa may develop into the tropical Atlantic’s first hurricane in the coming days. The multi-model ensemble then takes it north well off the US East Coast, eventually becoming a deep low near Iceland – potentially triggering then high pressure over the Alps. :-)

After a mostly clear night, a "cool" summer morning in Switzerland, with light frost in the Engadine and upper Jura (Amburnex-Combe). Locally, e.g. Rothenthurm/SZ and Visp/VS, it was even the coldest morning of summer 2026! Low cloud over Ticino (blue in MTG Cloud Type) kept it milder.
