That's a really interesting question as there is undoubtely some overlap between true unretouched Clactonian Notches and flaked flakes where the flake is a core for the product. But a retouched notch like this wouldn't have produced useable debitage I dont think?

I guess I should try a bunch of different barks but the roundwood I've tried it on (mainly hazel, ash and alder dont respond well). They help with some late stage abraision but the stripping is bettter with a flint flake

A really sensible idea, but the last specialist to look at associated bone couldn't see that kind of scraping, while some site with that scraping don't have notches

A lovely little Clactonian notch, a specialised Lower Palaeolithic tool over 400,000 years old. At #Archaeotech26 I made one and tried to work wood with it, as I've done a few times before. And, as before, it seemed very ineffective. So what were these tools used for? #FlintFriday #FindsFriday 🦣🏺

The insidious creep of generative AI into our profession is heartbreaking. We've got to start investing in primary sources so at it isnt scraping slop into a death spiral, value human intelligence & creativity, & challenge Gen AI when we see it and it doesnt declare itself transparently to be so.

Butser's most quietly influential result is a negative one: the roundhouses showed a central smoke hole is a mistake. Smoke percolates out through the thatch by itself, and cutting a vent turns the roof into a chimney — draught up, sparks into dry straw. A lot of reconstruction drawings got redrawn.

Between Two Rivers is a charming introduction to ancient Mesopotamian history told by describing items found in a museum of sorts in ancient Ur. The archaeologists who unearthed the items 100 years ago were the Woolleys, upon whom Agatha Christie based her characters in Murder in Mesopotamia. 💡📚💙
A photograph of two books: the 2025 North American hardcover edition of Moudhy Al-Rashid’s Between Two Rivers: Ancient Mesopotamia and the Birth of History and a paperback edition of Agatha Christie’s Murder in Mesopotamia (first published in 1936; this “official authorised” edition was published by William Morrow in 2025). Al-Rashid’s history is very accessible and offers a relatable, personal kind of introduction to the wonders of ancient Mesopotamia. The Christie novel is very much of its time (misogyny, xenophobia, colonialism), but worth reading as a companion piece to Al-Rashid’s history, if only to flesh out the fascinating character of Louise Leidner, based on the real-life archaeologist Katharine Woolley who, with her husband, worked on the site in ancient Ur and uncovered the “museum” Al-Rashid describes in her book.
