Hi, I’m David Plaxco. On this account, I share aesthetic solution states of n-layer Rubik's cubes. Otherwise, I teach math at UGA, research undergraduate mathematics education, and try to make my experiences here on earth more meaningful.

This is the FTO (face-turning octahedron) twisty puzzle. It’s now an official WCA event And I think it’s lovely. Here, I’ve solved it to a pattern that is striped when viewed from 4 vertices, and concentric squares from 2 vertices.
I imagine other folks have done this pattern, but I just had to try it. I don't know what to call it... Stripes? I don't think it's octahedron-in-an-octahedron. One thing I really like about this pattern is that (I think) there's a sort of parity to the colors. l've learned that this puzzle has two classes of colors - blue/red/ purple/yellow and white/gray/orange/green. If you notice here, the blue & red pieces are swapped and so are the yellow and purple pieces (as a permutation, this is two disjoint 2-cycles).
These colors form a tetrahedron on the octahedron (no two are adjacent). There is a dual tetrahedron formed by the other four colors! But those colors are not swapped in pairs; the three white triangles moved to the gray face, the gray triangles to the orange face, the orange triangles to the green face, and the green triangles to the white face (as a permutation, this a 4-cycle!).

I cut flowers from my garden today and put them in three Growth Vases. We created them in 2009, using a branching growth algorithm to generate the form. 17 years later, I’m still fascinated by the same question: what can we make when we use nature’s algorithms for growth to create art and design?

Excited to have my art Topological Trio included in the Bridges 2026 Exhibition of Mathematical Art, Craft, and Design, held this week in Galway, Ireland. My related paper is also part of the program. #MathArt #LEGO
These three LEGO designs celebrate several topological structures. A model of Borromean rings is constructed in red, green, and blue; the brick dimensions offer just enough tolerance to feel the rings are separate. An orderly tangle of six squares is constructed from six layered squares made of white and tan plates. A double layered cube based on a design by Rinus Roelofs is constructed from three layers of plates.

This is from the new WH report on the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History, calling for what the museum *should* say about slavery and human rights. One question: those 750,000 people who died in the Civil War to end slavery… who killed them? And why?
It should tell the story of how the colonies inherited slavery from both global and European slaving practices, but also how the words, actions, and ideas of America's Founders helped spark a worldwide movement that ultimately ended slavery. It should tell the story of how at least eight American colonies passed or attempted to pass laws to either tax or severely limit the importation of slaves before the Revolutionary War, only to be forced by the British Crown to continue it. It should tell the story of how 750,000 Americans died in the Civil War. It should tell the story of how Americans came to reject Jim Crow and segregation, backing a colorblind standard derived from America's founding documents. In short, it should tell the story of the birth of America and how the United States, because of the principles enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and upheld in the Constitution, has done more to advance and secure fundamental rights than any other nation in the world.

If you care about finite groups, you must at some point make your own really nice picture of the subgroup lattice of the alternating group on five letters. 🧮
Sub(A_5) Hasse diagram with subgroup nodes clustered according to conjugacy. Inspecting the diagram reveals that Sub(A_5)/A_5 is not a lattice: [C_2] and [C_3] do not have a least upper bound.

I've been exploring this family of patterns. These are torus knots/links with 3n crossings (for n = 0,..., 5) on odd-sized Rubik's cubes from 3 layers through 13 layers. I tried to make the colors exactly the same, but the even links forced me to use edges from the r/w/b half of the cube.
Six images of nxnxn rubik's cubes solved to states that depict mathematical knots/links. The sizes of cubes increase by 2 layers, beginning with a classic 3-layer Rubik's cube (solved to show an "unknot") and ending with a 13-layer cube (solved to show the 15-crossing torus knot). Each knot/link is a torus knot/link with 3n crossings from n = 0 to n = 5. The 6- and 12- crossing links each have two components.

I never knew what was so great about the "great icosahedron". Now I do! Take a regular icosahedron whose vertices have coordinates in ℚ[√5]. Apply the nontrivial element of the Galois group: that is, replace √5 by -√5. You get the great icosahedron! (1/n)
A "great icosahedron" - a star-like 3-dimensional shape with the same vertices as a regular icosahedron, but with large pentagram-shaped faces that intersect each other instead of the usual equilateral triangles. That is, each vertex is no longer connected to its 5 nearest neighbors, but instead its 5 second-nearest neighbors.

Here’s a link I doodled on the 7cube yesterday.
Eight photographs of a 7-layer Rubik’s cube solved to a state that is an 18-crossing link of three components. Each photograph centers a different corner of the Rubik’s cube and they are arranged to give a sense of how the pattern continues when you rotate the cube in your hand.A (kind of) stereographic projection of an 18-crossing link of three components. This projection allows the observer to experience all six sides of the patterned Rubik’s cube simultaneously.A more abstract planar embedding of the same link from the Rubik’s cube in the first image. All threads are colored black.A more abstract planar embedding of the same link from the Rubik’s cube in the first image. All threads are colored differently to emphasize the 3-fold symmetry of the link. They are colored black, light blue, and pink. Trans rights are human rights.
