A few days after it was launched, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) physicists went up on their roof to track its radio emissions as it passed overhead and realized that that signal could be used for navigation. GPS and the other sat nav systems _all_ come from that moment.

I doubt it had much of a direct effect here in the inner solar system, but out in the Oort cloud, where orbital speeds are a km/s, it would have undoubted destabilized comet orbits, sending some out, and some down to us.

I was working at Symantec in Santa Monica 25 years ago in the live virus lab with about 100,000 real viruses. It was very easy to prevent their “escape”; no network connection to the outside. No physical media could leave.

The question here is liability. No one doubts that the makers of computer viruses, which also can escape and do things their makers may not have intended, are liable. The only reason there is any doubt about that with LLMs seems to be the money behind them.

Yes. I think the consensus among US elite pundits and senior politicians that the way to protect liberal democracy is *not* to punish elite figures who violate its rules is wrong. A norm starting at least with the Watergate pardon. The opposite is true. You need to enforce the law and Constitution.
