What if the ground beneath your feet remembers? Bogs aren’t wastelands. They're time capsules; beautiful living systems that preserve food, rituals, travel, climate, and human stories for thousands of years. Today, I wrote about the muck that keeps our history. The New York Times, October 5, 2026

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

Climate change versus logging? That misses the point
Climate change and logging are not competing threats to native forests. Their effects compound one another, increasing emissions, fire risk and pressure on biodiversity.

This whole piece by @tressiemcphd.bsky.social is a must-read, but this part rings especially true. If you're a centrist worried about the future of the party, maybe focus your $15 million freakout on shoring up black voting in the South instead of pushing milquetoast moderates in deep blue NYC?
Black organizers in the South expected a Democratic cavalry after the Voting Rights Act was gutted by the Supreme Court. Instead, they feel abandoned. They look at conservative groups like Heritage Action and Turning Point USA and wonder what they could do with that kind of support.
