The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

SNAP enrollment is down in CT since last year — but where?
In Connecticut, about 55,000 fewer people are enrolled in SNAP, including nearly 18,000 fewer residents under 18 receiving benefits.

This is true, but I’m guessing each place could build 10-20 miles of lanes within maybe 3 years, especially if they increased the overall budget per mile to support new planning and procurement staff.

CBO says Iran war has cost $44 billion as of 9/1. Higher gas and diesel prices have resulted in $100 billion in extra costs to U.S. families. $144 billion could have funded 200 miles of fully protected, grade-separated bike lanes at $750K/mile within each of the 1,000 largest U.S. cities and towns.

Nice visualization. I wonder if the dot sizes could be a little larger to emphasize the large jump in "area burned" size represented by 2023 (relative to prior 30-40 years). Also do you have a guess (roughly speaking, projection-wise) where 2026 might fall on this chart?

Climate change does not cause wildfires, but hot and dry conditions make them much more likely to spread. In Canada, 9 of the 10 worst wildfire years were both dryer and hotter than normal. And these fires are burning in areas that were historically not managed or suppressed.

That's pretty high for inside an office. My (heavily filtered) indoor reading hovered ~19 yesterday, going up to 33 when the smoke level spiked in the afternoon (>120 outdoors and in the office hallway), but it's now back down to 4-7. In the extreme smoke here in 2023, it was >70 indoors though.

It can be a lot like a cloud rolling in. I have an office monitor for indoor and outdoor pm2.5, and could watch those levels spike very quickly in addition to the sudden visual changes in the air.

It's moving into CT. Even with a brand-new HEPA running, PM2.5 ug/m3 in my office gradually rose through the day from 19 to 33, according to my monitor. It's typically ~2. Opening the office door, 2nd floor indoor hallway reading is 105 ug/m3 now. Outside, it's up from 60 this AM to >120 now. #ctwx
