Rest in peace, lovely Eva Marie Saint. As we pay tribute, let us remember how she once reacted to a bunch of compliments she thought went overboard. She was as down-to-earth as stars ever get. (Louella Parsons sternly told Saint to apologize; as far as I know, she never did.)
AP story, 1/26/1960: Actress Says Four-Letter Word Not Slip of Tongue
HOLLYWOOD (AP)-"I'm embarrassed only because of all the fuss," Eva Marie Saint said Monday.
The blonde actress said it wasn't a slip of the tongue Sunday night when she shocked a fancy, black-tie banquet of the movie industry's biggest names by using a four-letter word.
"The dinner was a private af-fair, and if I had thought for a moment that the newspapers would have reported the incident, I wouldn't have said it," said Miss Saint, one of the screen's favorite nice girls.
After a flowery introduction by Jack Benny at the annual Screen Producers Guild dinner, Miss Saint stepped daintily to the mi-crophone, smiled sweetly and said: "Aw, ----!"

2) Navigate your way to a place you’ve never been
I know we all have phones that do this for us. I’ve grown way too reliant on mine, and it’s not like I had a particularly sharp sense of direction to begin with. If I forget which turn to take to get to some place I’ve been before, I don’t try to puzzle it out based on what I might know about the neighborhood or whatever—I look at my phone. I suppose you could argue that all that puzzling was a waste of time, that I should be glad to own this device which allows me to sidestep it, but is it not my sovereign right as a human being to waste a little time now and then? Do I really not have thirty seconds to stand at a corner, squinting down side streets, looking for some familiar landmark?

my play goes in a doppelganger-farce direction that Pullman never did, though, and THAT probably traces back to my seeing 3 different productions of "The Comedy of Errors" (acting in 1 of them) over an 18-month period when I was in junior high formative childhood experiences!!!

I’ve seen reviews linking the “North by Northwest” stage adaptation to the “39 Steps” stage adaptation from the late 2000s, but when I saw it last night (it’s in its US premiere at ACT in SF) I got a strong hunch that actually Emma Rice was riding the more recent coattails of “Operation Mincemeat”

Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.

Tweed is such a beautiful fabric to wear this time of year because it produces, in Dolly Parton's phrasing, a coat of many colors. Even a solid-colored brown is not just brown, but bits of red, blue, and yellow to produce something that looks lifted off the Scottish landscape.
There are two photos taped together. The top shows a brown stone building with a brown thatched roof. It's surrounded by green grass, stone walkways, and blue-gray sea. Below is a checked brown tweed that reflects the colors in the landscape above it. There are two photos taped together. The one at te top shows a rocky hillside with green and straw-colored grass, gray rocks, and a tan sandy beach below. The blue waters are crashing at the shore. Below is a green herringbone tweed that reflects the colors in the landscape above it. There are two photos taped together. The top shows a field of green and straw colored fields with bits of purple flowers. Below is a a series of checked brown tweed that reflect the colors in the landscape above it. A swatch book of solid-colored tweeds. The green tweed has visible flecks of red, gold, and blue.

retvrn (to characters making their entrance via helicopter)
Th is was in the days when you could really think big in the
park—Raúl Juliá made his entrance as Prospero in Th e Tempest around
that time descending in a harness from a helicopter. He had to go out to
New Jersey before the show, and the stage manager in the park had to call the cue from the Delacorte booth by dialing the New Jersey heliport on a landline (called a telephone back then) for them to take off ten minutes before “beginners.”

Of course the iced coffee thing is Gender; if E.M. Forster's "A Room with a View" (1908) is anything to go by, middle-aged men have been using their love of iced coffee to dismiss young women as basic & shallow & conformist for over 100 years
When he was introduced he understood why, for Miss Honeychurch, disjoined from her music stool, was only a young lady with a quantity of dark hair and a very pretty, pale, undeveloped face. She loved going to concerts, she loved stopping with her cousin, she loved iced coffee and meringues. He did not doubt that she loved his sermon also. But before he left Tunbridge Wells he made a remark to the vicar, which he now made to Lucy herself when she closed the little piano and moved dreamily towards him:

“If Miss Honeychurch ever takes to live as she plays, it will be very exciting both for us and for her.”
