One thing that has been interesting for me realizing after getting involved in Safer Streets advocacy is the number of people who’s opinion fundamentally amounts to “as long as nobody ever makes a mistake anywhere; we’ll have a totally safe system.” Yet don’t realize it.

Literally CBC's Your World Tonight had a story about how quiet this Atlantic storm season has been with no hurricanes yet reported, but didn't mention the massive hurricane that's growing in the Pacific? That is an absolutely wild editorial choice.

As we look toward a civic election and a significant el niňo winter, I would love to hear how candidates plan to act on climate change adaptation. I would especially love to hear their plan for snow-clearing during a guaranteed TERRIBLE freeze-thaw cycle winter so people can actually bus and bike.

Would my 20 year-old self approve of my choices? Tonight my friend was reading a Zizek joke and I remembered that poor kid went on a date with a theatre major guy who drove the wrong way down one ways multiple times to see The Pervert's Guide to Cinema. I have given her a different life, thank god

The thing about AI discourse is that a lot of times people aren't arguing about the technology, they're demonstrating which of the following things they think are more complicated: computers, the human brain, a field of potatoes. I saw someone call the brain "a wet computer."

One of my favorite uncelebrated Frank O'Hara poems. "Spleen," from 1954
Text:

SPLEEN

I know so much
about things, I accept
so much, it's like
vomiting. And I am
nourished by the
shabbiness of my
knowing so much
about others and what
they do, and accepting
so much that I hate
as if I didn't know
what it is, to me.
And what it is to
them I know, and hate.

I love this thread. A thing that always comes up when I work with students is the importance of understanding and defining the terms of your research question. What do we want to grow? Who should efficiency serve? Whose time matters? How do we shore up trust? Who gets included in "we?"

While we're talking maps, local pals, what app are we using for buses these days? I tried the Transit app after the service switch last year and was dismayed that it doesn't cache the trip and I have to re-enter every time I re-open app?? Am I missing something?? That seems absolutely disqualifying

Thank you for modeling this, @mattmakel.bsky.social! Your candor is admirable. Librarian perspective: I frequently meet with scholars who (wrongly) think they're searching the full text. This leads to longer conversations about indexing, paywalls/open access, digitization/PDFs/OCR, etc.

Thinking again of that Toni Morrison quote (which seems to never not be relevant):
"The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing."
