Started reading Nick Land's early book. He has some extremely standard history of ideas takes that he pursues with non standard viciousness.

It was the dumbest of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of liars, it was the age of cruelty, it was the epoch of subservience, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of hatred, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hopelessness, it was the winter of despair.

I visit about once a day to find my weather guy — and only my weather guy — and am immediately presented with graphic violence, eugenicist philosophy, virulent hatred of women and LGBTQ people, all complemented by AI slop. It's like tip-toeing through an open sewer to find out if it's going to rain.

This is as close as anything to the molten core of modern democracy: can legislators and laws bind executives? That question has been the motive force of a lot of revolutions, democratic collapses, and democratization

also, doing that work is fucking hard. My body is irreparably damaged. I suffer from mild to severe chronic pain problems because of it. There are few safety nets for manual labourers, and if we want more of them how do we change the environment for workers so many deem as less than?

talked about this before and again, i'm speaking as a third generation journeyman trades worker, but working in trades is not something that any of the people who write these pieces, or honestly most of you, respect at all. It's perceived as something you do when all the "good" options are gone.

There are reasons other than net take-home pay that generations of American parents steered their kids toward college. I don't see how "go into construction!" is helpful unless paired with more robust worker protections and a true safety net, especially in right to work states.

What irritates me most about the "covid is no big deal" crowd is that there's growing evidence that unexplained neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's are actually caused, at least in part, by repeated exposure to viral pathogens over a lifetime.

Again: what we’re doing here is defining “understanding” as “the thing that humans do.” If a model is accurately absorbing new information, solving unsolved problems of incredible difficulty, engaging in detailed back-and-forths, but is not “understanding,” the word “understanding” has no meaning.

Rain
Raymond Carver

Woke up this morning with
a terrific urge to lie in bed all day
and read. Fought against it for a minute.

Then looked out the window at the rain.
And gave over. Put myself entirely
in the keep of this rainy morning.

Would I live my life over again?
Make the same unforgiveable mistakes?
Yes, given half a chance. Yes.

More than 3000 people died of AIDS every year in NYC between 1987 and 1997. Between 1991 and 1996, it was over 6000 per year, peaking at above 8000 in 1994 and 1995. The scale of suffering and loss was magnified by the fear and stigmatization attached to it. Unimaginably tragic.

Some of these people got it wrong, but a substantial number wanted the fascism and spun it this way on purpose. It was a 1.5% margin in the popular vote, which is hardly a broad mandate for fascism. What none of them counted on was how terribly awful they'd be at governing. Breathtakingly bad.
