NYC has more top end amazing restaurants, Portland has fewer bad ones. Pick a random restaurant, bar, or food cart; it’s likely to have really good food at relatively reasonable prices.

Incredible opinion. It holds that the common ICE tactic of jumping out of an unidentified rental vehicle and seizing suspected noncitizens while masked violates the Fourth Amendment because the *manner* of the seizure is incompatible with a free society governed by the rule of law.

🚨HOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional! ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

The Gravamen of the Disclosure

4. The gravamen of the disclosure is as follows:
a. By memorandum dated May 12, 2025 (“the May 12 Memo”), Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons authorizes ICE agents to forcibly enter into certain people’s homes without a judicial warrant, consent, or an emergency.

b. Specifically, in the May 12 Memo, the Acting ICE Director authorized ICE Agents to rely on Form I-205 (which is not a judicial warrant) to enter the residence of an alien subject to a final order of deportation, without consent, including by “a necessary and reasonable amount of force.”2c. While addressed to “All ICE Personnel,” in practice the May 12 Memo has not been formally distributed to all personnel. Instead, the May 12 Memo has been provided to select DHS officials who are then directed to verbally brief the new policy for action. Those supervisors then show the Memo to some employees, like our clients, and direct them to read the Memo and return it to the supervisor.

So when authorities say “she tried to run over an officer,” that is not a neutral description. It is a claim of intent that can be used to justify lethal force after the fact. When the state kills first and invents the threat afterward, it is not policing, it is death squad behavior. /end

Where are my “extreme political activists and social media warriors” at? Also DSA members, since the Portland Metro Chamber apparently thinks it’s a slur. This was sent by Jon Isaacs, VP of Public Affairs.

“community stands behind you. It has long been an axiom of Portland politics that even the perception of working with business is broadly opposed by Portlanders. This message is delivered daily by Portland's deep well of extreme political activists and social media warriors. After seven years at the Chamber,
I can confidently say that, in fact, the exact opposite is true.
At City Hall last month, Democratic Socialist Councilor Angelita Morillo…”

I imagine someone must have researched this, as I have a vague memory of Maine’s governor saying the state would withhold taxes if Trump cut off funding to the state for refusing to comply with an illegal executive order. (And agreed; Medicaid is big on that list too)

The state collects a lot of federal taxes from state employees. What would happen if the state clawed back SNAP funds via refusal to pay federal taxes? It’s a bad idea if the feds could go after the employees, but if it’s the state that’s another story.
