Today I joined the chorus of community leaders calling on Washington County Chair Kathryn Harrington to resign after her extremely disrespectful conduct towards her colleague Commissioner Nafisa Fai. Stepping back is not enough. There is a history of behavior here, and this crossed the line.

Multnomah County has provided TriMet cards to our employees for over a decade. The prolonged closure of I-5 is the perfect time for Portland to further align regional policies towards our mutual goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions & providing sustainable transportation options for employees.
September 1, 2026

Dear Portland City Councilors,

I am writing in support of the proposed policy coming before you for a vote this Wednesday, September 2 to provide City employees TriMet fare cards at no cost.

Multnomah County has provided our regular and limited duration employees a TriMet pass at no cost for over a decade. We have found our TriMet Pass Program to be a successful incentive and appreciated benefit for our thousands of employees.

A similar policy at the City of Portland, especially with a prolonged closure of I-5 imminent that will cause increased traffic and congestion, is the perfect time to further align regional policies towards our mutual goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing safe, sustainable transportation options for our employees.

I urge members of the Portland City Council to vote yes.

Sincerely,
Jessica Vega Pederson
Multnomah County Chair

If you have air conditioning, keep windows closed, set the AC to recirculate indoor air and run an air cleaner. If you do not have AC, open windows at night to cool your home, be sure to run an air cleaner to help filter out the smoke let inside.
Managing extreme heat and smoke can be a balancing act, but for most people at risk, extreme heat and overheating is more immediately dangerous than smoke. illustration of a mother, daughter and son playing board games on the floor under an air conditioner in a window with smoke and a blazing sun outside. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebatián Durán Guerrero should be alive and with their families today. They leave behind devastated families. The President has shown his incredible lack of respect for humanity in his response.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo lived in the United States for 35 years, raising three boys who were U.S. citizens. He was on his way to work when ICE stopped him – supposedly because he "resembled" the person they were looking for – then shot and killed him.

Days later, an ICE agent shot and killed a 26-year-old man from Colombia in Biddeford, Maine. Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero's 3-year-old daughter and wife watched in horror as he took his last breaths. EMS took over 30 minutes to arrive, and he was in the street for approximately 5 hours. Neither Mr. Durán Guerrero nor Mr. Salgado Araujo were the target of the warrants ICE had.

Both men should be alive today and leave behind devastated families. The President has shown his incredible lack of respect for humanity in his response.
