I know academics get it, but sometimes I just miss "home." I don't even know where it is anymore. What weird jobs we have, that force us away from our communities and families.

We so rarely see literary scholarship that brings in scholars of education, including Applebee and Rosenblatt, as this piece does. This article is really interesting to me--still thinking it through. There's a lot going on. Somehow, it still leads with Holden Caufield. 😜😭

How to support workers who experience pregnancy loss
There is a significant gap between the needs of those who experience the loss of a pregnancy and the supports available in workplaces

Hey! Scholars! If you're using someone's work in your class, sometimes it's nice to email them and tell them, because then they might feel good about their research instead of entirely crushed by the academic humanities' ongoing descent into the grave

I have never been great at being crafty or creating an atmosphere as a host but suddenly my son (almost 8) wants to have a birthday party (1st time he has wanted one) with a space theme and I'm obsessed with plates that look like planets and astronaut balloons.

Despite the limitations of the term 'bereavement leave', I'm so pleased the #EmploymentRightsAct at the very end of 2025 means #pregnancy ending before 24-week viability for any reason now entitles people to leave from work. #pregnancyloss #miscarriage #abortion #TOPFA #TFMR

Bereavement leave acknowledges someone’s loss of a baby. When only sick leave is accessible, we ignore the grief people experience. Glad to see some local change.

We have to do a better job supporting teachers at work following a miscarriage. For more on the layered pressures they face, see this article in AERA Open, "The Influence of Policies and Professional Expectations on Teachers' Leave Decisions and Well-Being ..." journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

This semester has been 🗑️ at work and really stressful for me personally bc I am worried about my kid. But you know what? One thing that always makes me feel good is receiving and giving updates back and forth with teachers I've interviewed. No matter what the future holds, I'm so grateful for it. 🌻

Do any of my academic friends have suggestions for resources about supporting an autistic child in the first years of school? (hyper verbal, high IQ, serious obstacles in building social relationships). When I search I get a zillion resources about identifying autism... I want to know what to do!

Hochschild is brilliant!! It’s a shame that so many people misuse concepts from her studies, which are fantastic and framed through the lens of labor. Her concepts are about WORK. She just so happened to include women’s uncompensated work in domestic spheres.

What Arlie Hoschild found was that when women entered the workforce en masse in the 20th century, men functionally went on strike from domestic labor—forcing women to take on a double day of wages and caretaking work.

One thing I share with my students, who are learning to be teachers, is that young people in schools often encounter many teachers, all with different policies and personalities across a day. It may not be that they didn't read your policy. They may be trying to navigate nuances across classes.

I wonder: how do we distinguish between human error and what we now think of as people's laziness or unethical engagement with research? A reviewer thinks I used AI in a manuscript because of human errors I made in the year of citation in a real source that I read and consulted.

My son's favorite part of our recent vacation was convincing me to touch this wall of ice and then maniacally giggling 😊. My favorite part was that while I was away I got official notice that I have been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at the USF College of Education.🌻🥂
I am standing in a tunnel where the walls are made of ice. My son is standing in from of me. We are both touching the ice with bare hands and smiling. I put an emoji over my son's face.
