A4 2/2: Later, I saw one of those students tell other students proudly about their language. On the other hand, I remember Mexican student mention they wanted to learn their family’s Indigenous language. I got the sense their family had experienced linguistic discrimination, which saddened me.

A6: I’d love to see both local community input as well as teachers connecting with language speakers across the globe diasporas for heritage speakers. Multilingual students are already usually engaged with media and family across borders and languages. I’d love more ideas! #literacies

A5 1/2: I have seen teachers (even language specialists!) with very flattened perceptions of families' languages. I think it’s so important to learn about families’ languages because each family can have varied repertoires made up of colonial, regional, and ethnic-specific languages. #literacies

I wonder, what linguistic knowledge and literacies are we missing when we advocacy for English-Spanish bilingual education? In fighting for Spanish to be valued in the U.S. are we missing the opportunity to grapple with it's historical and contemporary colonial imprints? #literacies

Q5: Because Indigenous languages are overlooked, we often miss the opportunity to have uncomfortable conversations about Spanish as a colonial language. How might we lean into this discomfort to disrupt linguistic hierarchies reproduced in classrooms, communities, and beyond? #literacies

A4: I’ve found that in dual language schools where my former candidates teach or where I’ve supervised student teachers, there are students placed in Spanish language classrooms whose L1 is actually an indigenous language. Spanish as well as English are both L2s for these kids.

A3: The messaging both flattens and narrows. "Tools" like GenAI flatten how people think about language (e.g., that horrendous ChatGPT commercial with the two older women), and English-only policies narrow both the allowances of linguistic difference and who is allowed to use language. #literacies

A2 1/4: I was born to a monolingual white family, so my English dominant languaging practices reflect that. I began learning Japanese at 12/13, and used it in college at my church, Japanese friends, and in Japan itself. My Japanese is pretty dormant now though. 😭 #literacies

Not going to lie: the word "pilot" in education has been climbing in terms of my least-favorite terms. The idea that we frequently "pilot" products/curriculum on students—who only get one chance at this K-12 thing!—is bonkers to me...

This quote! "Hard times require furious dancing. Each of us is the proof." #literacies
"The next generation of my family, mourning the recent death of a mother, my sister-in-law, created a spirited line dance that assured me that, though we have all encountered our share of grief and troubles, we can still hold the line of beauty, form, and beat - no small accomplishment in a world as challenging as this one.

It's always important..
