I'm still keeping an eye on Kilauea, waiting for fountaining episode 55. Overflows are happening again, now from the top of a cone that has built up over the past couple weeks. Are these precursors to the big event? Dunno, but it's neat! www.youtube.com/watch?v=HggW...

I've watched quite a few youtube videos where bands on tour stop by the local radio station studio to play a short set. Nobody does it better than KEXP. Head and shoulders above the rest. (Incidentally, I'm finally ready to appreciate this masterpiece. Thanks, Merlin) youtu.be/wb0fW8yQCHc?...

Had a terrifying thought this morning: what if happiness and personal fulfilment depends on something besides having just the right travel power/charging setup? probably best not to think about it too much.

I opened the Notes app on my ipad and found many delightful artefacts of the past. One was a note from 2016 called "My Doctor Who Ratings" with one entry: The Empty Child: negative infinity I'd prob. rate it higher, but it's an understandable rating for an ep. that gave an 8 year old nightmares.

I've been using Goodnotes to annotate pdfs for some projects on my ipad. Recently many of the files in my database have broken, showing only annotated blank pages (see pic). So I'm looking to switch apps. Anybody have recommendations? (I know, the handwriting is very bad. New apps can't fix that.)

Friendly reminder: Please don't drop into someone's replies, guns blazing. You're not going to have the impact you want by insulting strangers, unless the impact you want is making strangers sad or angry. If that's why you're online, grow up. It's not cool to be a dick in your free time.

really sucks how much social media (even just text based ones) has fragmented....bluesky has lib chopped uncs...substack notes has annoying writers...threads and twitter have all the really mentally ill people. That used to be all in one place!

I finally looked into the etymology of the word peon, and it turns out that it has nothing to do with a class so low that they were peed on, as I thought when I first encountered the word as a ten year old.

Ok people. You can vote for literally the most boring rock forming mineral or a *cobalt* mineral with a name that's real fun to say. It's not a hard choice. Vote skutterudite!

Subtweet at the company that put out the corporate presentation I'm looking at right now: pyrite does not have cleavage planes, so don't go putting that in your corporate materials. It makes you look bad.

Tiger got to hunt, Bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder, "Why, why, why?" Tiger got to sleep, Bird got to land; Mans got to tell himself he understand. That's real good, and I feel like it's one of those Truths that justifies fiction.

Occasionally YouTube shows ads for sex pillows. Weird, but fine. I guess that's a thing people want. Today one of those ads came up with this picture. What is going on here?! Can this generation of marital aids pretend they're babies, to console childless couples? Why is this?

New vent on Kilauea! The other day I posted about how fountaining was imminent. Well, it didn't. Since then, spattering around the north vent has made a little cone, and in the last day, a new vent has opened up! The volcano is still showing inflation, so fountaining is still likely. Soon!?

This is a really interesting question, and the replies are fantastic. BTW, Zach is a really good follow. In addition to great comics, he posts thoughtful questions about science, philosophy, AI, fruit trees, and more. The discussions are mostly refreshingly free of social media nonsense.

Sometimes I think, "shipwrecks were probably more common than plane crashes, but they weren't too common, right?" Well, today I came across this Wikipedia article about shipwrecks in **March** 1823. Most crews were rescued, but still, that's a lot of boat crashes! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

How in the world is "Go at artist" or similar not an option here in Apple Music? How are people in Cupertino listening to music where they don't ever come across a track and think, "what else does this artist sing, and how can I find out without typing that into a search box?" Maddening.

Ballpoint pen, copic marker, & a bit of crayon. A fully grown man is in a tree fort high above the ground. A pack of river beavers have circled the tree and are beginning to chomp. He pleads with the beavers. “Beavers,” he says. “Let’s talk. I can get you logs.” It’s doubtful that a deal will be made. These beavers have had their sights set on this tree and there’s no guarantee that this man can deliver on his log promise. Big tree fall hard. Artist’s note: I like how the leaves turned out here.

Kilauea is set to start its next episode of impressive fountaining at any point now. Right now, the north vent is bubbling up, releasing lava onto a relatively flat surface, leading to some really cool lava buildup. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HggW...

We need to do something about the variety and quality of pastries at our nation's coffee shops. I'm in Canada right now and a couple years ago was in NZ. The baked goods, sandwiches, etc. of even the little shops in the British Commonwealth puts America's to shame.
