Grocery margins are low is a frequently rehashed point to argue against Mamdani’s public grocery stores. Grocery is indeed a low margin business. But its median return on invested capital is above that for all firms, so it is NOT a low profitability business. Let me explain. 🧵

People really need to use models more complex than a spreadsheet where GDP and debt growth have zero interaction with each other. Meanwhile, the Venn Diagram of people who push these “debt doom loop” spreadsheets and the people who say “where’s your model?” to MMTers is a circle.

In system dynamics, stocks and flows create a system's behaviour, but they don’t operate in isolation. They sit inside webs of interacting feedback loops. Feedback is simply information about what’s happening in the system’s stocks, fed back to influence its flows. 🧵1/10

That the education sector is being treated as a market for genAI and not as the very thing that makes it work tells you everything you need to know about what’s driving this particular economic bubble. Anyway, we’ll see if Evan Solomon’s AI task force addresses these issues. I’m not hopeful.

Good news about the cutting-edge AI tools from the $3-trillion-dollar company.
Google AI search result for “was 2010 fifteen years ago?” returning: “No, 2010 was 14 years ago, not 15 years ago. The current year is 2025, and to find the number of years ago 2010 was, you subtract 2010 from 2025, which equals 14.
Current Year: 2025
Past Year: 2010
Years Ago: 2025 - 2010 = 14 years”

A proposal for a “grand bargain” with the United States? It’s 2002 all over again
I had to laugh when I heard yesterday that the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and the Center for North American Prosperity and Security is pitching a “Grand Bargain” between Canada and the United States. Apparently, according to the report’s emailed release, “the crisis in US-Canada relations presents an unprecedented opportunity to forge a transformative agreement that goes far beyond traditional trade deals.”

As someone who has spent quite a bit of time looking at the synthetic voter literature, my take on this is that Morgan McSweeney is planning on getting his advice from a convex combination of existing newspaper articles.
Owen Boswarva @owenbo... • 48m
Morgan McSweeney (UK Labour's Dominic Cummings knock-off) is reportedly experimenting with
'synthetic voters' - "essentially fake focus groups of Al voters who can tell ministers more quickly and cheaply what the public thinks of policies" www.spectator.co.uk/article/can-…
#govtech #govcomms
McSweeney is exercised by the fact that the civil service has 7,000 communications officers, 4,500 of whom work for arm's-length bodies and quangos and frequently attack what the government is trying to do. Like Dominic Cummings, he is enthused by the possibilities of technology to speed change, such as Al in the NHS or gamers being hired by the Ministry of Defence to fly drones. He is now experimenting with 'synthetic voters' - essentially fake focus groups of Al voters who can tell ministers more quickly and cheaply what the public thinks of policies. In the last week he has been reading The Technological Republic by Alexander Karp, co-founder of the tech firm Palantir, which argues that the West's technical dominance over the past century has been down to collaboration between governments and tech firms

A great op-ed by @himself.bsky.social and @dsquareddigest.bsky.social, but if they'll permit a quibble: these challenges aren't unique. The story of over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives provides an instructive tale on this very theme.🧵 www.nytimes.com/2025/05/23/o...
Excerpt from linked New York Times op-ed reading, "Perhaps the greatest concern about stablecoins is their potential to provoke risk to the entire financial system. Because they are neither fully inside nor fully outside the traditional financial system, they present unique, grave challenges for which there are no clear answers. For example, the Genius Act’s drafters propose regular reports on their implications for financial stability. Yet they have no clear response to a critical question: Does the United States stand behind dollar-based stablecoins or not?

Specifically, if a stablecoin got into trouble or turned out to be a fraud, would it be bailed out? Doing so could create massive liabilities for U.S. taxpayers. Companies that are too big to fail are tightly regulated and supervised, and for good reason."
