The most controversial conclusion I have drawn, from a Marxist perspective at least, is that we need markets after capitalism. In late twentieth-century debates, any allowance for markets was treated as a concession to capitalism. But markets make a viable postcapitalist society more decentralized, adaptable, and open to experiment.

Across the twentieth century, attempts to make Marxism serve as a guide to a society or economy beyond capitalism often blocked people from thinking more freely about new institutions.
The mistake Marxists made was to identify market exchange with profit-oriented investment. Markets and currencies existed for thousands of years before capitalism without producing a dynamic economy organized around profit. We need to preserve exchange while abolishing the power of private profitability to direct investment.
