Aside from being a crazy phenomenon, what I think is most interesting here is what it tells us about lexical concepts. Mahesh & I propose that the specification of reference to even simple things like forks is abductive - there are no lexical necessary & sufficient conditions for reference.

Talking about machine translating Finnish, check kirjopesu. This poor women wanted to buy laundry detergent in Finland and saw a word kirjopesu. Looked it up in AI transator that said ”book washing”. Yes, kirja is book and plurals are formed with the stem kirjo- (kirjoja, books, plural partitive).

I overheard two university students discussing how to describe sounds in writing. If there’s a printer in a comic, in English its sound can be written as “brrrrr.” But that doesn’t work in Finnish, because the “r” is too rhotic in Finnish. I didn’t hear what they decided what it should be. 🤔 Bzzzzz?
