This year’s Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery is well worth a look if you’re in #London. It’s free and open until 7th Oct. A wide range of styles on display, and the standard seems better than ever this year. Here are some of my faves. #Art #ArtSky

By Hannah George
Acrylic on board, 2026

Closely cropped, this inventive self-portrait offers an intimate window into the complex emotions experienced by a mother, six months postpartum. The composition, in which Hannah George dramatically casts her hand across her face, is vulnerable - pressing her eyes shut as she navigates a significant transition. 'The distortion of my face reflects how unfamiliar I felt in my own body, caught between who I was and who was becoming. Through this altered perspective, the work became a way to explore a different view of myself.

Hannah George (b.1988) undertook a BA (Hons) degree in fashion, media and promotion from Huddersfield University.
Her work has been seen in the Royal Academy of Arts' Summer Exhibition in 2021 and in group exhibitions in London. Londoner
By Evgenii Gruzdev
Oil on canvas, 2026

The unusual format of this portrait of Glaswegian-born and Jamaican-raised
Professor Kevin Fenton, subtly concentrates the viewer's attention on his intelligence and personality. An infectious disease epidemiologist, he was London Regional Director of Public Health during the COVID-19 pandemic and received a CBE for his services in 2022. With the city's skyline reflected in his glasses, Grudev expertly embeds this narrative and the sitter's long association with London in the structure of the portrait.

Evgenii Gruzdev (b.1975) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. His work was included in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters' Annual Exhibition 2019 and his commissioned portraits are held in private and public collections.Matthew
By Angela Classi
Oil on aluminium, 2025

This is a tender portrait made by a mother of her son. Capturing her son Matthew's calm stare whilst sitting at the family kitchen table, the New York-based artist Angela Classi was inspired compositionally by the work of 20th-century Austrian painter Egon Schiele, whom both admire. Completed over several sittings and enjoying the natural ight of the environment, the portrait is Classi's attempt at capturing her son's
"contemplative and even quirky nature'

Angela Classi (b.1964) gained a Masters Degree in physical therapy from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. Her work has been seen in exhibitions including at the Salmagundi Art Club, winning best in show for illustration, 2026, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Exhibition 2023 and the Heckscher Museum Biennial, 2024.Rominha with a Red Earring
By Margaret O'Hare Oil on canvas, 2025

Florence-based artist Margaret O'Hare painted this portrait entirely from life, under natural lighting, using the sight-size method. The result is a classical friendship portrait scaled to life. Romina's direct and unwavering gaze juxtapose the soft, loose brushstrokes of her attire. Dressed in a black chiffon dress featuring a timeless, sheer ruff, the sitter's ensemble was assembled from pieces in both the artist and sitter's closets.

Margaret O'Hare (b.2000) undertook a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at the University of Virginia followed by studies at the Charles H. Cecil Studios, Florence. She was a finalist in the 2025 Future Generation Competition of the Portrait Society of America, 2025 and her work has also been seen in recent group exhibitions in London and Florence.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, as a child. Off panel, someone says to her, “Enjoy your youth!”
The second panel shows child Sarah again, now frowning. The person off panel continues, saying “After you’re 30 you’ll be old and your life will basically be over.”
Before the last two panels there is text that reads “LIFE AFTER I TURNED 30.”
The third panel shows adult Sarah opening a door.
The fourth panel shows the door opens to a beautiful field with flowers, a rainbow, and a pond. Sarah says “Wait what.”
