To clarify, the bright star in the system is obscured (intentionally) to allow for imaging of the circumstellar dust & debris that orbits it. Here's what it (probably) really looks like. The shape suggests a hidden mass, maybe a shepherd planet sweeping dust into neat piles like a cosmic Roomba.
The bright star Fomalhaut and its ancient debris disk. Over the years, some research has supported the existence of a planet in the disk, while other research has not. The newest ALMA observations support the idea of an exoplanet around the young star. Image Credit: NSF/AUI/NSF NRAO/B.Saxton
Fomalhaut is one of the brightest stars in the night sky and is about 25 light-years away, making it a galaxy amenable to detailed observations. It's also a young star, only about 440 million years old. At that age, stars like Fomalhaut are surrounded by active debris disks made of rock and dust from collisions between planetesimals. Exoplanets form in these disks, and one of the hot topics in exoplanet science concerns how planets form in these circumstellar disks.

What if the ground beneath your feet remembers? Bogs aren’t wastelands. They're time capsules; beautiful living systems that preserve food, rituals, travel, climate, and human stories for thousands of years. Today, I wrote about the muck that keeps our history. The New York Times, October 5, 2026

During a 2022 Red Sea heat wave, beneficial bacteria treatments successfully protected wild corals from bleaching. A study shows both live probiotics and heat-killed "postbiotics" preserved coral health, offering a tool to help reefs survive rising sea temperatures. Allessandra DiCorato reports.

The marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna) looks like a ferret dressing up as a cheetah for Halloween. They're native to a semi-desert grassland strip from Eastern Europe to Central Asia. Like a skunk, they can spray a foul-smelling fluid from anal glands. Let's talk about them. (📷: Petra Prager)
A marbled polecat photo from Petra Prager. It looks almost exactly like a ferret, but the arched back is sort of orange with brown dots on it similar to a cheetah, and the head has a white stripe that reminds me of a skunk, with a long floofy tail and dark limbs. This one looks alert and at rest.

If Jonestown is going to teach us anything, let it be how human needs can be weaponized, and how power destroys the possibility of refusal. Remember the victims as people instead of cheap synonyms for being an idiot.

There are serious things to say about authoritarianism, manipulation, and cults of personality, but “lol, drink the Kool-Aid” does none of that work. It makes the victims’ supposed gullibility the memorable part and lets the machinery of their captivity and agonizing death disappear.

At the end, children were poisoned and armed guards surrounded the pavilion. People objected because they wanted to live. They were shot for it. Whatever individual adults believed or chose, calling the whole thing blind devotion erases coercion, and children cannot consent to their own murder.

People were isolated in a remote settlement in Guyana, subjected to surveillance, threats, and intense punishment. Leaving was dangerous. Some escaped, and others desperately sought help getting out. “Why didn’t they just leave?” is remarkably easy to ask from somewhere you’re free to leave.

Peoples Temple drew members through promises of racial equality, material support, and community. Most were poor, many were elderly. 70% of its members (and victims) were Black. Wanting somewhere to live with dignity and joy was the vulnerability Jones exploited.

I am so tired of Jonestown being a stock reference for “haha, you’re in a cult.” 918 people died, most against their will, and still it has become shorthand for how stupid you think someone is. It's the McDonald's hot coffee incident of mass death — universally referenced, entirely misremembered.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

An illustration done mostly with digital colored pencils. Ok, so we have a wooden coffin in the classic top-heavy hexagon shape. The coffin is propped up at an angle on nothing against a background of gray-blue paint splatters as a spooky sheet ghost rises out of it. Although it’s not a real sheet as it’s translucent and there’s nothing inside of it except a gape-mouthed green skull in the approximate head position within the sheet. The ghost is wearing a big. floppy, black witch’s hat and there’s a little brown bat hanging down from the wide brim. The ghost’s arms are extended holding a jack o’ lantern with a one-toothed frowny face carved into it. Popping out of the jack o’ lantern is a a black cat with green eyes balancing the cap of the pumpkin on his head. And on the stem of the pumpkin cap is a very serious-looking brown speckled owl. A series of spooky speech balloons is chained together around all this , each balloon containing one word and associating back tot he spooks and creatures named in the reverse order listed. The lettering in the balloons is red and drippy and reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.
