This is a huge issue. So many liberals are existing in a reality of their own construction in which the institutions actively facilitating the stripping of our rights are cast as marvel superheroes coming to save them.

this is not a problem you can fix with calm, reasoned debate. you can't even fix it by improving people's lives with policy. there is no clear, proven, non-violent solution to this issue. finding one is the most significant problem of our age.

this is a pattern, not only across the history of Trump Administrations, but across US immigration policing. Terror followed by outrage followed by a steady hum of violence that appears normal by comparison to what preceded it. I don‘t think it “climaxed” but it‘s important to stay focused.

Ten years of relentlessly hateful, comically elitist anti-democratic politics across the white people world, helpfully summarised. The wrong people are talking, the wrong people are deciding and it’s harming the careers of important people who actually matter. Smithers! Release the hounds
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.

Facebook page "Angry Jew"
> It used to be you'd point out a leftist had said something antisemitic and they'd say "It's never antisemitic to be against Zionism", which is a denial and a deflection but at least accepts the premise that antisemitism is hypothetically a bad thing. Now they say stuff like "People are dying, I'm past giving a shit about hurt feelings" which is notably, not a denial anymore

> I don't know if this is that "Trump gave right-wingers permission to be bigots out loud" cultural shift from ten years ago finally catching up with the left or something else. As someone who's been visibly Jewish in lefty spaces for a long time though, it is a noticeable change from "I'm not being antisemitic" to "So what if I am? Who cares"

The left must not let tech CEOs lead the converstion on AI regulation. Amodei's proposed "slowdown" amounts to self regulation and weakening antitrust to create a private AI duopoly. However, a legislative frontier AI moratorium and public ownership/control would break Silicon Valley.
