NEW: The NIH is quietly restricting funding for research that evaluates how public policy impacts human health. According to internal documents I obtained, the agency no longer considers policymakers "mission relevant" — a massive shift for the biomedical funder. My latest for @nature.com:

At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded women’s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years. Here’s what’s happened instead. Hard to study women’s health if you can’t say “women.” wapo.st/4euUt1c

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers. The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. 🧵👇

NIH has for decades used a rigorous recruitment process to hire its top scientists, the institute directors. The Trump NIH is changing that. They’ve already installed one political hire this way, reportedly a friend of JD Vance. This post describes the process. Demand the Trump people follow it.

I stand with Joachim Frank. I would hope that others would have had a better understanding of history. 2/2
Joachim Frank, a German American biophysicist at Columbia and 2017 Nobel laureate in chemistry, said he was outraged by Columbia’s unwillingness to litigate instead of negotiate. The stance, he said, had emboldened Mr. Trump to ask for even more money from other universities. Dr. Frank called the administration’s decision to withhold funding over accusations that Columbia had tolerated antisemitism a “ruse for the government to take control of the universities, in a model essentially similar to what happened in Hungary and Turkey.”
