Had to grade a ton of student writing this week and developed a list of “real talk” questions to ask them about common issues I saw in their papers. It turned into a surprisingly productive conversation.
Screenshot showing a list of questions: “8. Why do you cite from random shitbags on the internet instead of from any of the qualified,
vetted, peer-reviewed, reputable, expert sources I assigned for our class readings?
9. Why did I spend 13 years in college earning a Ph.D. in order to be called “Ms. Liming” in
papers written by my own students?
10. Why do you love prepositions—like, love, love, loooooooove them – and hate me

Summer is over upon the sea. Elizabeth Bishop, from Complete Poems (1969)
SONG

Summer is over upon the sea. The pleasure yacht, the social being, that danced on the endless polished floor, stepped and side-stepped like Fred Astaire, is gone, is gone, docked somewhere ashore.
The friends have left, the sea is bare
that was strewn with floating, fresh green weeds. Only the rusty-sided freighters
go past the moon's marketless craters
and the stars are the only ships of pleasure.

Cytogeneticist Dr. Barbara McClintock won the 1983 #Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her study of corn chromosomes--revolutionizing the field of cytogenetics. She is the only woman to be awarded an unshared Nobel Prize in this category. She died #OTD in 1992. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white photograph from 1947 of American cytogeneticist Dr. Barbara McClintock (1902–1992), who would later win the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering genetic transposition. She is seated in her laboratory at Cold Spring Harbor, deeply absorbed in her scientific work. Looking downward with a focused, serious expression, she wears delicate wire-rimmed glasses and a light-colored, buttoned lab coat over a collared shirt pinned with a round brooch. Her short, dark hair is parted to the side. Her right hand holds a fine tool over a petri dish, while her left hand rests carefully on the edge of another dish next to a glass specimen vial. On the table stands a large, black vintage compound microscope with multiple metal objectives. The composition centers on her meticulous hands and face, with a softly blurred background of lab shelves and window light, creating an intense, studious mood of historical scientific discovery.

Wendell Berry had this way of making you wonder if you were really living up to your principles, which I appreciated. At a talk he gave in SF in the 00's, as he described a low-tech life, my buddy Gordy leaned over and whispered "I turned off my cell phone for this," a joke about our dependencies.

One of the most important questions in the history of biology, posed during an 1837 discussion of agricultural breeding in Brnö by Abbé Cyrill Napp, the man who recruited Mendel: "What is inherited and how?" (Transliteration, translation, reference and source in Alt)
Hr. Prälat Cyrill Napp reaffumirt in ge-
drängter Kürze den Gang der bisherigen Debatte,
tritt der von Hrn. Direktor Liehr geäußerten An-

Google translate: Prelate Cyrill Napp briefly summarizes the course of the debate thus far and concurs with the view expressed by Director Liehr, pointing out that the discussion has strayed entirely from the actual subject—heritability; the issue at hand is not the theory of the breeding process, but rather the question: What is inherited, and how?
