Gallery 12 at National Museum Cardiff now has EIGHT of our wonderful Monets on display. As viewing experiences go - none of the jostling and filing past you might find in the galleries of Paris and London. If you come early enough you might even have them to yourself!

Just look at the glee on Nigel Farage’s face as he watches a Piddington resident cry about the overt racism she, her Caribbean heritage husband, and their two children have felt in the village during the referendum. Time and again he’s showing us exactly who he is.

I have had some great teachers in this life, and she was the one who taught me what I could call the survival techniques to being a writer. I wouldn't have made it this far without her. I'm grateful to her, for her. Rest in peace, Annie.

Oh no, not Annie Dillard. She had such an exquisite mind. I, like many I'm sure, return to her book The Writing Life again & again – I teach with it, too. Thinking of what she wrote on that second-to-last page: "What are we here for? Propter chorum, the monks say: for the sake of the choir."

I can't believe it's been two years since I wrote this essay for @thequietus.com – sad to say that the polaroid Pat bought me before he died – & that I took on this road trip – finally died itself last year. Quite poetically, when I was at Derek Jarman's cottage – make of that what you will!

It's always a surprise to find my mother on the iPlayer when I least expect her! She's 23 here – ❤️ – in the BBC's 1972 Play of the Month, Merchant of Venice, starring Maggie Smith & Frank Findlay, & directed by Cedric Messina. What a delight.

It was a privilege to review Lieke Marsman's extraordinary memoir for today's @thetimes.com. @dauntbookspub.bsky.social sent a copy months ago & I devoured it in an afternoon – not a heavy book at all, as I feared, but calm, lucid, cerebral; funny at times; a curious thing – strangely invigorating:

Lieke Marsman in her memoir, On Another Planet They Can Save Me, follows the trajectory of her incurable bone cancer. She died this year aged 35

A *very* niche Q here at happy hour on a Friday(!), but on the topic of Mann's The Magic Mountain: I would like to use 7 words of it for an epigraph – taken from HT Lowe Porter's translation & I'm losing my wits trying to figure out whether it's out of copyright. Can anyone help?

Just finishing my copy edits, returning to Derek Jarman's Blue, & marvelling at the fact that when it was premiered in 1993 Channel 4 & BBC Radio 3 collaborated on a simultaneous broadcast so ppl could watch it while also listening to it in stereo. More antiquated – & yet more imaginative times.

What a beautiful & accomplished writer Emma Watson is, I had no idea – this piece about her friendship with Gloria Steinem moved me very much. This paragraph in particular, the image of her crouched on the floor showing Steinem her hands: www.newyorker.com/culture/essa...

A random ask but: I came away from the RA's brilliantly moving Richard Dadd exhibition with a thirst for more context – & in Googling I discovered that Angela Carter wrote a BBC Radio 3 play about him titled 'Come Unto These Yellow Sands' in 1979. Does anyone know if it's poss to hear it somewhere?

This will always be my fave Dolly Parton song maybe because it shows just how bold & self-possessed she was. A single woman, pregnant & abandoned by her lover, stands on a bridge ready to jump. She was a teenager when she wrote it. And that ending – my god. It's a wild, extraordinary song:

Just finished Joan Barfoot’s Gaining Ground, what a book. And those lines: “In a way, it’s not right to do anything; or it’s right to do nothing. It is necessary to let things be.” I’ll be thinking about those lines for some time to come.

And yet there is something quite perfect about Bill Callahan & Ed Askew ending up in Pseud’s corner. Particularly tickled that Askew is getting a shoutout in Private Eye – he’d make it into a song if he could.

Happy release day to the wonder that is Ed Askew: whose musical life began with the 10-stringed tiple in the 1950s & ended with his death last year, aged 84, on the verge of releasing this final record. I wrote all about him here – give it a read: listen to the music, spread the word:

Just to add to the convo around social care: I remember being told by Pat’s hospice that our only alternative for care (hospices don’t have the resources to house residents for more than 2 weeks – & that’s another huge failing in this country) was a care home for the under-55s.

One of my prized possessions at school in the nineties was a GCSE history folder that I painstakingly laminated with cut-outs of various male actors that I fancied and let's just say that most of that folder would need to be redacted now.

How do you write a thousand words on Ed Askew when his music evokes a sea of them? As his pal Jay Pluck said before Askew died last year: “Ed was a brave gay songwriter from the beginning & I hope more come to know this.” I hope so, too. May this be the first feature of many – lord knows it’s time

Any other actor playing Ada’s brutal husband in The Piano could have made him an entirely one dimensional character but Sam Neill played him with such complexity that that brutality became something else entirely: frayed & shatterable. He acted as he lived it seems to me – with such integrity.

I can't remember the last time I cried at the end of the play. Arcadia at the Duke of York's Theatre: cerebral and tender and playful – that delicate dance – with the kind of perceptive staging that made me audibly gasp in its final moment. If I can afford to go again, I will. If you haven't – BOOK.
