We really do need to talk about how, like, the UK political/media elite have genuinely gone mad

No, that 22 year old does not have a baby brain and should know right from wrong. They should go to prison for sexual assault. No, a curfew for 17 year olds is not a bit weird - it is a massive curtailment of an adult's rights. Of an adult who will be able to *vote* by the end of this year!

In addition to all the below..by design a bunch of 18 year olds are suddenly out of the family home in some form of work or tertiary education, and we keep shunting the 'here's a bunch of painful lessons you learn as you get older' further into people's lives, when they are more catastrophic.

An Ibis hotel by Wembley Stadium is coated in flammable Grenfell cladding. 100,000s of guests stayed without realising. No one knew because of a mysteriously bodged fire test and and a rewritten safety report. The freeholder? Billionaire Asif Aziz’s firm. www.londoncentric.media/p/asif-aziz-...

I like that they’ve given up on even having immigration enforcement as a pretext for any of this. It’s just purely armed masked goons wandering around in the middle of intersections harassing U.S. citizens as a display of force now.

It's wild. We have so many real problems as a country, and instead a large chunk of our political class would rather hallucinate that one of the safest big global cities in the world is actually dangerous.

Difficult to grasp how the crisis of UK universites - largely caused by bad policy and bad management - is not treated as a massive national problem that requires government involvement to help solve the issue. Product of a discourse in which parties don‘t want to be seen as appealing to graduates?

So Trump is now going to try to rule like an early modern king - just avoid calling the estates general or parliament or the diet and so rule by fiat. Maybe someone in the GOP should turn the page in book and see what happened next...oh, oh dear...oh no...oh dear ohnonono....

The wounded knee thing is really Trumpism distilled to its essence. It’s not enough to be able crush people who can’t fully defend themselves, it’s not enough to actually crush them, you also have to love and admire those who do the crushing otherwise the Trumpists’ delicate feelings are injured

I think the lesson of the last decade is that when you suddenly remove American leadership the gap gets filled by *nothing* Europe badly lacks capacity, China has domestic neuroses to match the US, and another way of phrasing "prioritizing regional balances of power" is "more small wars"

I was walking down a street in New York and I thought how lovely it was, with the trees and the light. Tried to take a photo and this came out. It’s incredible how blind we become to the ugliness of cars. They really do mess things up. Yet somehow we manage to filter them out.

Don't attack them for being hypocritical, attack them for being homophobes. It is, again, something that sets them out from the British public, even on the right.

Have deleted this earlier post of mine as I think calling it a lie doesn’t quite hold up to scrutiny without me moving the goalposts, and detracted from my core point that the overemphasis on Blue Sky is indicative of where Webb is getting his information
An earlier post of mine quoting the post by Robert Saunders that reads: He's saying it because it's a lie going around on Twitter. Twitter is a fucking poison amongst the UK media and political elites

If listing cases of 2025 US political violence, one would include the Charlie Kirk killing, the Melissa Horman killing (MN state legislator), and the CDC shooting. The president omitting Horman and CDC, but reaching back 8 years for a non-deadly shooting to cite, conveys approval of those shootings.

I've said this before, but every time I've gone back to the UK in the last 25 years I've been shocked by *some* sign of the atmosphere getting worse toward migrants, from government announcements to private attitudes. I'm hesitant to go back right now at all out of sadness at where we are.

On a deeper level, MPs in a representative democracy are under an obligation to *listen* to whatever their constituents believe, they’re not under an obligation to act as if it’s true or moral when it’s not.

Bizarre discussion on the radio likening air condition to passive smoking because it accounts for 3% of CO2 emissions. But: we don’t moralise turning heating on in winter, and heating accounts for 15% of emissions. If aircon is intrinsically immoral, so are radiators.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

This new strain of “I went to London. I saw some social problems that were the predictable cause of not spending enough on the safety net and on infrastructure. I decided it was the fault of immigrants. Also, London is finished but also too expensive” talk, among other things, is just loser talk.
