“SHALL WE PLAY A GAME?” Today in 1983, “WarGames” opened. It would go on to earn ~$80,000,000. In 2008, screenwriter Lawrence Lasker recounted to “Wired” how he arranged a private screening for family friend President Ronald Reagan at Camp David the following evening. www.wired.com/2008/07/ff-w...
An original one-sheet color poster for the film “WarGames.” In the center, Matthew Broderick sits at a computer showing a map of the United States and multiple lines pointing toward various US cities. Ally Sheedy stands behind him, her left hand on his left shoulder. Their smiling faces are reflected in the monitor's screen. At the top are eight large color screens displaying similar information. One says “Missile Warning.” Another reads, “Sub-Launch Detection.” People manning desks with smaller computer monitors sit or stand beneath and behind the large displays. Below this image are the words, “Is it a game, or is it real?”

A 1988 ad for Wasteland, a post-apocalyptic RPG by Interplay for PC platforms Interplay's persistent, open world of deadly mutants, heroic Desert Rangers, Martian red herrings, and toaster repair skills became an unforgettable experience that was rekindled by Fallout nearly ten years later in 1997.
HOT. MEAN. RADIOACTIVE

The text reads like an entry from one of the Desert Rangers, the military unit that had managed to still cling to civilization in the American Southwest nearly a century after the bombs fell in the late 90s. Dated August 20, 2087, the entry reads in part:

Nothing could be worse than this god-forsaken, radioactive desert. More Snipderdroids! All tracking me with them death glares. And them Uzis. They're weird trigger-twitchin' folks. I suspect it's them poisoning the water.

Or maybe it's those Leather Thugs. Heck, I don't know anymore. I heard they have a bunch of civilians cut of east of Ranger Center, which is where I'm headed. Hope not. They want me dead. Like every other mutant this side of Vegas."

The text ends with: "WASTELAND. A new role-playing game from the creators of the Bard's Tale series."

The main art shown above is of Las Vegas which now exists as a ruined city, rife with danger. A shot of the box art is also shown (the game came on 5.25" floppies in an album-like folder) and a screenshot is shown displaying that a lucky party member has managed to gain a rank. Congratulations!

The game was developed by Interplay and published by Electronic Arts.

I really, really need people to understand that as a function of supremacy, normal everyday people lie constantly about their intentions—to everyone, but perhaps to themselves most of all—and most often in service of protecting their ignorance and complacency, rather than any coherent ideology.

Anyone who has a NYT subscription is to blame for this ignorance being tolerated. Taking the gift is the corruption, not the quid pro quo. Eric isn't being pedantic, he's dead wrong. Part of the intent is to ensure agents aren't influenced even subconsciously.

one lesson the Trump folks have learned is that the media will almost never say someone is “corrupt” or did something “illegal” — they’ll only ever say that questions have been raised. which means that it makes more sense to do something blatantly illegal than to stop halfway

~45% of US corn production is now used to make ethanol, mostly for mixing into gasoline. That's ~13% of all US crop land already used for energy production. Using some of the same land for solar panels would capture 50-100 times more energy per acre.

The Rwanda arrangements were first reported by the Washington Post, which also cited work by independent journalist Marisa Kabas, who had uncovered the recent deportation from the U.S. of an Iraqi national to Rwanda.
