Meta dominates social media but their apps basically feel the same, except for the things that have gotten worse. And despite using all our data they got for free to enrich themselves they still try to get us to pay them money directly. So no, concerns about data centers are not overblown.

The average person has a poor opinion of these companies because they are not offering clear value. Sure, AWS is important for the Internet but most of us interact with Amazon via retail. And buying things on Amazon has become a dramatically crappier experience.

Data Centers are a perfect example. You want to build them, people say no thanks, and instead of working through it you decide everyone who says no is an asshole. Meanwhile every big company follows the Microsoft playbook of buying up small companies to avoid having to compete.

I'm rather annoyed with the increasingly common smart person caveat of concerns over data centers being "overblown." For one thing, some concerns (I.e. water use) may seem overblown now, but only after a stink was made about it. These companies could have avoided the water use complaint entirely.
