Why should renters like me have to trade away our privacy just to get a roof over our heads? | Samantha Floreani
The rise in real estate tech means renters often hand over huge amounts of revealing information to digital third parties – at great risk * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast Would you trade your data privacy and security for housing? Thanks to the rise in real estate technologies, renters often have no choice but to hand over huge amounts of revealing information to digital third parties just to have somewhere to live. All the while we are told: trust us, we take your privacy seriously. But recent Guardian reporting has revealed that seven popular “rent-tech” platforms have serious security vulnerabilities, leaving millions of documents containing personal information of renters exposed on the open web for years. When they were alerted to the risk, only two of the seven companies responded to say they would put additional security measures in place. Is this what taking renter privacy seriously looks like? A genuinely dispiriting thing about covering sexual violence is how often the suffering of women and children is metabolized as political point-scoring or titillating entertainment.

Rep. Jim Jord..&

But that's not all. YouTube is making changes to its platform to prevent future censorship.
YouTube is committing to the American people that it will NEVER use outside so-called "fact-checkers" to censor speech.
No more telling Americans what to believe and not believe.
ist to other large platforms, YouTube has not operated a fact-check. ntifies and compensates fact-checking partners to produce content ion. YouTube has not and will not empower fact-checkers to take a tent across the Company's services.

These people have smarted themselves into the dumbest fucking arguments. Determining whether someone is "doing politics the right way" depends almost entirely on the content of their speech! If someone lies constantly and endorses authoritarians that's not practicing good politics.
What Ezra means by "the right way," and what I meant expressing a similar line this morning, is that Kirk was operating within a liberal framework that was modeled on persuasion and included real, robust support for free speech. Obviously it's not an endorsement of the content.

I’m also reminded of how perpetrators of sexual violence use claims of incompetence or confusion to get away with violence. It benefits fascists to keep their incompetent actors in the public eye for similar reasons. A lot of people believe you can only be evil if you do it on purpose.

The real MeToo “cancel culture” was what happened to the women and other victims who came forward. They were retraumatized, harassed, humiliated, sued, fired, and blacklisted. Then they were the subject of a revisionist history that MeToo went “too far” and deserved a reactionary backlash

The idea that there should be a public debate about the appropriate medical care for a minuscule population of children remains one of the most absurd lies that these liberal transphobes, NYT edit board included, tell themselves. No there shouldn’t! It’s not an appropriate matter for public debate!
It should be recognized that society is still grappling with the cultural and policy implications of the rapidly shifting understanding of gender. There are some issues - such as participation in sports and appropriate medical care for minors - that remain fiercely debated, even by those who broadly support trans rights. There should be room for those conversations. But what shouldn't be debated is whether the government should target a group of Americans to be stripped of their freedom and dignity to move through the world as they choose. This is a campaign in which cruelty and humiliation seem to be the fundamental point.

Defamation cases don’t always end in favor of the truth. Remember, Amber Heard lost one for saying “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” The response to the trial alone proved the veracity of her statement and she still lost.

Lucinda Nelson, a social media researcher at the Queensland University of Technology, said marginalised people, like those in the LGBTQIA+ community, needed more protection not less.
"What is the point of having rights when you don't uphold them when there's a threat to these marginalised populations?" Ms Nelson said.
"When trans rights and queer rights are under attack in political discourse, that's when they've chosen to pull away and reduce protections for these populations.

Meta literally created a LGBTQ exception for calling someone mentally ill as an insult. You can't do it for any other group except LGBTQ people.
The image is from a "Transparency Center" document and lists guidelines regarding acceptable and prohibited content for insults. It mentions:

1. Insults about:

Character, such as cowardice, dishonesty, criminality, and sexual promiscuity or immorality.

Mental characteristics, including but not limited to accusations of stupidity, intellectual capacity, and mental illness, as well as unsupported comparisons among politically correct (PC) groups based on inherent intellectual traits.

2. Highlighted section:

The document allows allegations of mental illness or abnormality when tied to gender or sexual orientation, referencing political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality. It also acknowledges the non-serious use of terms like "weird."
