I don't think it's a coincidence that teachers who are warm demanders tend to expect a great deal of themselves, know and take pride in their strengths, and are disciplined and structured about addressing their weaknesses.

For anyone leading, facilitating, taking part in a curriculum review and adoption process, this is a great read. Instead of fidelity, this: "The curriculum sets the bar, and teachers use their professional judgment to supplement and adjust so that students can meet that bar."

Note to self: This year I gave the 1-100 sheet (in past I started with 1-20 or 1-50) and noticed fewer students digging in. I think 1-100 was overwhelming. Next year, I'll give 1-30 and expand once we get going. First impressions matter in math puzzling too! #mtbos @mathequalslove.bsky.social

Chip Trading: 1 game ♾️ levels: 1 - base-10 blocks, trading 10s; 2 - colored chips, trading 10s; 3 - colored chips, trading 3s, 7s; 4 - adding/subtracting with 3s 7s. Ss play/explore the same idea (trading) and answer the same questions with diff levels of sophistication. #mtbos #elemmathchat

The 2025 Game: arrange the digits 2, 0, 2 and 5 with symbols in between (e.g. +, -, ×, ÷, ^, !, etc.) to make the numbers 0-10. For example, 2+0+2+5=9. How many can you make? (I just confirmed all numbers 0-10 are possible.) #MathsSky #MathSky #MathsToday #MathChat

I feel defeated. Because it feels like all of my planning time is spent anticipating how to manage my classes, not actually planning to do good math teaching. So today I taught poorly. I know I can do better, and yet today I did not. Today it felt like too much. I'll try again tomorrow. #mtbos

All this is not to say that schooling is not important or effective for math instruction but that the United States is socioeconomically distinct from our OECD peers, where our child poverty rates look more like Italy, Bulgaria, Spain, and Mexico and far less like Denmark, Norway, & Finland.

#learninglabs Session 2 with gr 4 & 5 Ts: Spent time co-planning gr 5 number string. What a treat to dig into teacher moves, anticipate student thinking, and practice setting and teaching towards learning goals. And, Ts role playing "tricky" Ss offered a much needed laugh to end the day. #iteachmath
