London was a great market for eels from the 15th C. onward. Many were imported by the Dutch, but not all. In the late 19th C. fishermen from the Norfolk Broads sold their eels in Billingsgate each fall, & the profits were enough to carry them through rest of the year if need be. 🗃️🧪
Meme. B&W photograph of a man fishing eels from a small boat. He is in the middle of the fens, and you can see the tall grasses at the edge of the water. Behind him is another boat and a small shack. The man, who is wearing suspenders and a hat, is holding a net and looking into the water.

You can see his reflection in the water...a blurry fisherman with a net looking skywards through the floating algae on the surface. He is perhaps in the middle of an existential quandary. For he himself is but a reflection of light that lets us see him, and so allows his image to be captured on film. Is he, then, any more real than his image in the water? What is reality, after all, but a trick of light? The man is stuck; paralyzed by worry about his own being.

The eels swimming under his boat are free of this kind of dread. Natural neo-platonists, they live in the liminal space between Being and Becoming, and that is that.

Meme text reads:

An Eelustrious Career"

The premodern world held possibilities and imagined futures: the physical and metaphysical systems that were actively built and contested then continue to inform the world in the present. Read our statement on the value of Renaissance & Premodern Studies: www.rensoc.org.uk/statement-on...
Two quotations from statement in gold on burgandy background:

'Where we start our story shapes what we see. Reducing our chronological scope to the modern period risks creating a shared assumption that the world as it was in 1800 was normal and normative."

"The arts and humanities in all their rich and expansive variety enable the creative impulses that underpin all human invention and achievement. They also provide the skills in creativity, innovation and critical thinking required in assessing information – skills that are particularly vital at a time when AI and disinformation are pervasive."

Phoenix logo beneath and image of engraving by Marco Dente after Francesco Salviatito the right, depicting an 'assembly of male and female scholars gathered around an open book, in the middle ground a man holds aloft an armillary sphere, another group of scholars in the background', c. 1515–27. Met Collection Accession Number: 17.50.16-105.

Today feels like a lot. But the eels still need our love. So... In c. 1500, Roger de Cailli promised 1,500 eels a year to the priory of Castleacre if the monks would pray for the souls of his mother, father, & 2 departed wives. Remember folks: eels are the way out of purgatory. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Medieval painting of an angel leading a group of sinners out of hell. There are 5 sinners, all naked and surrounded by flames. The angel (who is clothed) is reaching a hand out to them. They're grasping for it, and you would, too. There are 4 men & 1 woman, so she's probably thrilled to get out of there. Jerry keeps hitting on her, and he won't take a hint.

Hell is depicted here as the mouth of a giant dark beast. It looks a little like a cat head. The mouth and the ears and the space behind the eyes are all filled with flames. The beast has four sharp fangs at the front of its mouth, but the rest of its teach look rather human. The beast is looking upwards, like a dog groaking for scraps, and it's wide open maw makes it look like it's at the dentist. Despite having a portal to hell inside it's head, the beast looks friendly. If it sidled up to you in a park, and looked at you with those eyes, you'd pet it.

Meme text reads:
"Find someone you love enough
to save with your eels"
