Additional info: there's 50% (!!) off unlimited travel for a month, two months, or three months. For an under-27, this works out as £227 for a month; for adults it's £303. Only limit is that it's one trip out of your country and one trip back in. Otherwise unlimited. Seat reservations are separate.

Very excited to have the opportunity to think about #TitusAndronicus as a precursor to/trial run/source of #MeasureForMeasure for this event. So many crossovers: in/justice, consent, rape, forced marriage, revenge, mercy, piety, pleading, beheading, substitutions ... and silence.

Public service announcement: There's an #interrail sale between now and 30 September. 15% off for adults. A 4-day interrail ticket plus seat reservations works out cheaper than a return ticket to Germany. @lizschafer.bsky.social @profjsanders.bsky.social @starcrossed2018.bsky.social

This scrap fell out of my new/old Wagner. From the review of Jennie Tourel's performance as Carmen at the City Centre Opera Company, I date it to Feb 1944, which is corroborated by a reference to Operation Hailstorm (17-18 Feb 1944) on the reverse. Can anyone suggest which NY paper this is?

When I manage to concentrate among current madness, editing #TitusAndronicus takes me on the wildest, nerdiest rides. Utterly wonderful to have the scope to really think about a single word, in detail, and unpack what it meant to the audience. Today's favourite: entails, when smelling of incense.

I've signed and sent a letter - from authors, broadcasters, journalists, artists, scholars and performers - to express our deep concern at @exeter.ac.uk’s troubling plans to make mass redundancies within the Humanities Dept @uniofexeterhass.bsky.social. I would love it if you read and shared widely.
Dear Vice Chancellor, Provost, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean for the Faculty of Humanities,
Arts and Social Sciences and Chair of Council (cc Director of Human Resources and Chief Financial
Officer)
We write, as authors, broadcasters, journalists, artists, publishers, academics and performers in the public
sphere, to express our deep concern at the University of Exeter’s plans to make redundancies within the
Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS). The cuts come at a point when Exeter is not in
deficit, and they are not distributed equally across the university. With 114 of the proposed 153 FTE
academic redundancies falling within HASS, the University is dismantling areas of established excellence
and international renown in a Russell Group University whose reputation is known to be outstanding in the
Humanities. Several of the disciplines subject to the proposed cuts, including Classics and Ancient History,
English and Creative Writing, History, and Theology and Religion are among the UK’s strongest according
to league tables, the Research Excellence Framework (REF), the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF),
and other recognised indicators, including QS World Rankings.
The extent of the proposed cuts is both shocking and misguided. Exeter is seeking to make up to 20
academics redundant in English and Creative Writing, out of a headcount of 62. In Languages and Visual
Culture upwards of 17 colleagues will be made redundant, decimating subjects including Art History and
Visual Culture, French, German, Italian, Hispanic Studies, Russian and Chinese. 5 posts will go or have
gone in Classics and Ancient History (2 academics have already left), out of a staff body of 20. In Theology
and Religion up to 5 academics will be made redundant out of a group of 13. In History over 17 colleagues
will be made redundant, out of a staff body of 53. In the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies staff are
facing a headcount reduction of almost a third (6FTE out …

Now would be the time to get parents, employers, local communities, as well as students & staff to tell Parliament that if they want growth & regional revival, they're going to have stop cutting the engines.

BRISMES Council has written to the VC of @exeter.ac.uk to express our deep concern about the proposed reductions to academic posts in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, including within the Institute of Arab & Islamic Studies (IAIS). Read our letter: bit.ly/3SZnsS7 1/2
Page 1 of a BRISMES (British Society for Middle Eastern Studies) letter dated 2 July 2026 to Professor Lisa Roberts, Vice Chancellor of the University of Exeter. The letter expresses deep concern about proposed redundancies in the Institute of Arab & Islamic Studies (IAIS), highlighting the institute's international reputation for research, teaching, language provision, and leadership in Middle Eastern Studies, and warning that staff reductions would damage the discipline in the UK and beyond.Page 2 of the BRISMES letter arguing that proposed redundancies at the University of Exeter would weaken research capacity, student opportunities, specialist language teaching, and the international standing of Middle Eastern Studies. The letter states that the financial challenges facing UK universities are structural, that redundancies are not a sustainable solution, and urges the University Executive Board to reconsider the planned cuts to protect the long-term future of the discipline.Final page of the BRISMES letter signed by Professor Nicola Pratt, BRISMES President, and Professor Dina Matar, BRISMES President-Elect. The page also lists copied recipients, including senior leaders in the University of Exeter's Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
