I honestly did not drive much before I had a GPS, but even after, I always collected all maps, just in case. Dunno if they still have them, but Welcome Centers along the interstate always had free maps. When my car was totaled and I took all my stuff out, I found it was crammed full of maps.

Ink wash on handmade paper. It's a kind of minimalist drawing/painting of two bats against a moon. There's very few lines in this: it's mostly blocks of color that have a sharper edge and a blurrier edge though the bat shapes are nevertheless extremely clear and the wings have very clear and sharp points on the ends. The bats are in a grey ink. One is seen from the side, one from the front. The moon is represented by a reddish or pink curved line. It's a semicircle that's more red at the top and fades to grey at the bottom. The paper looks very textured in high resolution, but I'm not sure that will be obvious in bsky quality. It's a brownish yellow in color. I'm not sure if it naturally looked like that or if it yellowed over time. The drawing dates to 1830-1850. More detail in the link.

Even though it's October (the best month!), it's ridiculously hot. Had to hide in the shade to play Pokemon Go :p

Spooky Season has officially begun, and we’re kicking things off with a three-headed ferret.

OK, technically it’s three black-footed ferrets, but October calls for a little imagination.

Once thought to be extinct, black-footed ferrets are one of North America’s rarest mammals. At the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center, staff work to breed and recover these endangered little creatures and return them to the wild.

Cute? Absolutely. Three-headed monster? Only in October.

The smallest bat in North America is the canyon bat (Parastrellus hesperus), also called the western pipistrelle or American parastrelle. They weigh about 3–6 grams, the weight of a US penny, sheet of paper, or teaspoon of sugar. In flight, they're sometimes confused for moths or butterflies.

A tiny smoke-grey furry bat with darker face, ears and wings. The big story is the tiny size. The entire bat fits on a portion of a human's thumb, a tee-weeny tiny little guy.

This is a viral photo that's circulated for years, but I found it on r/BatFacts posted by u/Pardusco.

A beautiful calm ocean seen through a hull opening. It's a very blue image. There a few very small clouds on the faintly yellow horizon. Hardly any waves other than the ones made by the ship.
