The worst part of Bonta caving on the Paramount merger is that it's a big flashing signal to every other company that there is no antitrust enforcement in America and you can bully your way into getting whatever you want. It's a monumentally bad decision.

When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

As I said the first time Trump proposed tariffs: this is precisely why he likes them! It makes everyone come to him on bended knee, begging for exemptions. It makes economic survival dependent on his whim. That, not any economic theory, is the whole attraction. Mafia boss thinking.

That is the lesson they should be learning in democratic primaries like Markey vs Moulton, but will wave off with other reasons like incumbency and “maybe they don’t want younger people after all”

Has to be partly because it's so hard to draw any specific line that distinguishes it from his earlier tendency to lie and embellish constantly. For other people who don't routinely lie about stuff, some big public example can be the hook that they hand the change on, but this guy...

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,

The Lake America thing really drives home that the fundamental divide in this country isn’t left or right, it’s who sees the world and acts like an adult, and who wants to still be a child, throwing tantrums when they don’t get their way. It just happens to map well onto a partisan axis these days.

An easy way to identify whether a baby fence lizard is male or female is to watch and see whether it does pushups. I've got one that's currently attempting to claim territory from my window screen, and buddy, that's going to go poorly for you when you're big enough for the local boss to take offense

And those instincts are not wrong! It’s like the bottle, but many parts means you can’t afford for ANY to break early. If you don’t know how long they will last, you have to build them beefy, and you build to be able to replace any that fail. It’s a whole system that loses to “it just works”

As far as I can tell, it’s partly because engineering has gotten better. Disposable example, but cheap plastic bottles are so incredibly thin now that they feel like junk… because they don’t need the heft anymore. They don’t break even when they’re insanely thin.
