As Cabinet officials (Justice and Defense included) campaign at rallies across the countries for Trump allies -- and the Hatch Act be damned -- @rosenzweigp.bsky.social traces the wider pattern: Trump has drawn the whole of government into a coordinated effort to advance his political interests.

The govt gives lots of benefits that everyone can’t have (jobs, contracts, funding for projects access). If the 1A didn’t apply to decisions about these kinds of privileges it would give the govt tremendous power to shape the marketplace of ideas and retaliate against its enemies. Uhhhh wait….

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.

you can just do things
In February, a company processing debit-card transactions for Polymarket's U.S. betting platform delivered some alarming news:
Fraudsters were flooding the app.
Users were linking stolen debit cards to Polymarket US accounts, then trying to use them to make wagers and withdraw the money into clean cards or accounts they controlled. Thieves tried to make off with at least $10 million.
At one point, the processor rejected as fraudulent more than 80% of the deposits it was handling, a rate that far exceeded industry standards of roughly 1%. Polymarket employees quickly raised their concerns with Chief Executive Shayne Coplan, according to people familiar with the events.
The compliance team, those people recalled, was floored by Coplan's response: Just keep growing and pay a fine if regulators ever find out.
Current and former employees said Coplan's reaction, which hasn't previously been reported, was characteristic of his plan for Polymarket-growth at all costs.

The White House could have replaced the machines. Instead it gutted CISA's election security, ODNI's influence center, and the FBI's task force — and increased DHS leverage over state elections. Today in Lawfare: the federal playbook to intervene in state elections, and how to stop them.

In September 2014 (the same point of Obama's second term as where Trump finds himself now), the Fed Funds rate was at 0% and core PCE rose 1.55% YoY, and I would argue that over the ensuing decade, economic policy was shaped more by the level of Fed Funds/inflation than the values/beliefs of Obama.

NEW: DHS's Inspector General releases a scathing report about the Everglades detention camp known as "Alligator Alcatraz." The OIG finds that the now-closed camp, violated multiple ICE standards. The OIG also confirms detainees were punished with placement in a metal cage in the Florida heat.🧵
OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Staff also reported that time spent in the small metal enclosures is closely monitored, and
detainees are not locked in, even though we observed locking mechanisms on the enclosures.
Figures 11 and 12. Small Metal Enclosures; Observed January 21, 2026

Underneath is a picture of a metal cage that is 4 feet 3 inches wide by 4 feet 3 inches long, and 7 feet 9 inches high. The cage itself is placed on a tiny spot of fake turf, and then surrounded by another chainlink fence with razor wire on top. The cage is covered by a roof, but it's entirely exposed to the outside otherwise, meaning mosquitos and no air conditioning.
