It is bizarre finding myself saying of a paper published in 2024, "this is an interesting paper but why is it so old?" when previously, I used to say, "1990! That's practically yesterday!" about paper publication dates (this is about moving to computational language research from Old English).

Tom Bombadil doesn't play by the rules of Middle-Earth and can't really be judged by them. But this also means that in many ways, he can't be seen as "good" in the way that Middle-Earth understands "good."

In Middle-Earth, speaking words of command is dangerous at best, usually a true no-no. Every time Tom Bombadil expresses a wish - to the hobbits, Old Man Willow, or the barrow-wight - it is obeyed. He has a 1000 batting average in getting his way. As though his wishes were also his words of command.
