I unironically think that the VA hospital information infrastructure is relatively secure because it’s so dependent on jaded employees answering five total emails 9:30am-3pm with forty attached forms that getting access in the normal way takes 6 months

got a lot of likes on a bluesky reply where I talked a big game about beating up bigots—FYI, last week I burst into tears because I read that another pregnant woman in India has gestational diabetes so she can’t eat fresh mango in mango season. fully cried for her mangolessness

I really need to locate an old quote/passage that stuck with me (Arendt?) where a writer was talking to a guy who started confidently pointing out how Jews were running everything, and the writer felt so clearly that antisemitism was a form of intellectual practice for very stupid people

part of growing up is separating a sense of lurid fascination from actual importance. and I say this as someone who loved to follow the disputes and foibles of op-ed writers via gawker/twitter for years before I registered they were my east coast media version of vanderpump rules or whatever

1851 poster to alert the public to the Fugitive Slave Act, which reads: “CAUTION!! COLORED PEOPLE OF BOSTON, ONE & ALL, You are hereby respectfully CAUTIONED and advised, to avoid conversing with the Watchmen and Police Officers of Boston, For since the recent ORDER OF THE MAYOR & ALDERMEN, they are empowered to act as
KIDNAPPERS AND Slave Catchers, And they have alrendy been actually employed in KIDNAPPING, CATCHING, AND KEEPING SLAVES. Therefore, if you value your LIBERTY and the Welfare of the Fugitives among you, Shun them in every possible manner, as so many HOUNDS on the track of the most unfortunate of your race. straight up just not doing good! now of course I live one of the softest existences in all of human history, and every comfort in my life is built upon the endless cruelty this same government has inflicted on others the world over since its inception. and that's when I "lock back in"

real ones remember the summer of “A Little Life” and its grand Conversation about whether Yanagihara can write a sadomasochistic opera about gay men when she’s just some lady at NYT Style Mag (kinda yes because she’s so weird & the art is singular enough that I want it to exist but it’s not Normal)

watched three big Movies on vacay. best was One Battle After Another, which was weird/good/alive even though it made me sad and I cried a little. next best was the new Knives Out, a colorful cartoon full of A-list talent that’s mostly great. the political quips drag for me at times. last, Jay Kelly

never found jangling keys particularly amusing as a kid but over the years i've come to appreciate their brand of retro, almost vaudevillian slapstick performance, not just as a frantic frenzy of hilarious hijinks and gut bustin' goof em ups, but also as a truly incredible display of raw athleticism

I do encourage other people, especially anyone in medicine, to call their senators (mine must be sick of me) because I did tell both that I would rather move out of the United States than be a psychiatrist who could be accused of felony fraud for “enabling” the social transition of a 17 year old

Herman Melville on moderates, all the way back in 1857:
“You are an abolitionist, ain’t you?”
“As to that, I cannot so readily answer. If by abolitionist you mean a zealot, I am none; but if you mean a man, who, being a man, feels for all men, slaves included, and by any lawful act, opposed to nobody’s interest, and therefore, rousing nobody’s enmity, would willingly abolish suffering (supposing it, in its degree, to exist) from among mankind, irrespective of color, then am I what you say.”
“Picked and prudent sentiments. You are the moderate man, the invaluable understrapper of the wicked man. You, the moderate man, may be used for wrong, but are useless for right.”

I love the post office. one of my more half-baked political opinions is that postal banking would be awesome. accounts for rural or underbanked americans? sounds rad. I read a few articles 5+ years ago and don’t understand the issue more deeply than “hell yeah USPS”

conservatives don’t take issue with the abstract principles of what we offer as public services, they take issue with the “public” part where the whole point is integration of race/class/gender/“moral character” rather than laundering segregation through regional corporate chains

I know the popular term for what AI supplies is “hallucination,” which isn’t the worst, but I wonder if other docs would agree that it’s more like the “confabulation” you get from an alcoholic/Korsakoff patient. there’s an eerie moral/perceptual emptiness in those words-with-the-shape-of-speech

can’t help but think of politics through the lens of my recent time in “geriatric psychiatry” so that it seems like many aging politicians or voters are trying to make the economy into a memory unit where cheerful 1950s music is playing and the tvs show Andy Griffith 24/7
