I'm so tired of hearing tech bros say "first principles". But I really think somebody on the Messages™ team at Apple needs to embrace first principles and get back to the one task we need the app to do. I don't need you to hyperlink names, replace text with emojis, or make one sentence into three! 🤯

This is in some ways at the heart of our political dysfunction. For a lot of folks, so long as the basic civic infrastructure keeps (kept?) humming along, they don’t feel much personal effect from electoral politics, so it becomes a kind of entertainment & mode of self-expression.

A big part of the problem is that even if we got “the right leadership” the American electorate has demonstrated it will readily install a maniac ganster to replace them if the economy ever stumbles. You can’t really plan long-term alliances with that sort of partner.

While y'all are watching the Nathan Fielder documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, I'll be out here waiting for the documentary about the Amish handyman who moves to San Francisco and uses Claude to write his flyers and accepts crypto as payment
A satirical flyer taped to a black lamppost on a sunny sidewalk. Headline: "Noah Powers, Amish Handyman." It lists services including carpentry, fence repair, chair making, horse care, wagon repair, barn raising, and executive retreats. Below: "Handwritten estimates. No electricity. No engines. No shortcuts." Fine print reads "Stablecoins or seasoned lumber accepted. Rush jobs require four horses. Surge pricing during harvest. AI companies must bring their own extension cords." A QR code says "Book online." Bottom line: "Now serving Palo Alto." Tear-off tabs with QR codes hang from the bottom edge.

173,000 terawatts (trillions of watts) of solar energy strikes the Earth continuously. That's more than 10,000 times the world's total energy use. Sunlight travels 93 million miles to the earth in 8.3 seconds and guess what? Not one bit of it has to pass through the Strait of Hormuz to reach us.

laws, what are they, to whom do they apply? apparently not HSI ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What happened as the agents were leaving told me more about who these people are than almost anything else I saw. They had already made sure they all knew I was videotaping, pointing me out to each other as they prepared to leave. Then, as they drove their unmarked vehicles slowly through our street, windows tinted dark, every single one of them slowed down as they passed me. One agent put two fingers to his eyes and then pointed them directly at me. "I'm watching you." Another leaned forward and made a heart with his hands as he drove past. Another blew kisses at me. These were armed federal agents who had just descended on a residential neighborhood in masks and tactical gear, taken people away, terrified families, and now they were driving away laughing and trying to taunt a woman who had dared to stand on the sidewalk and record them. What I saw next is something I don't think I will ever forget. From what I could tell, at least two people were taken from our street. The one I witnessed was an older man with no shoes on, who did not appear to have a weapon and was not resisting. From everything I could see, he looked like someone who had simply gotten up that morning and gone to work on a neighbor's property, never imagining that before the morning was over he would be surrounded by masked men with rifles and taken away. His vehicle is still sitting in that driveway tonight, exactly where he left it. They just grab them and disappear them into the system. And then I watched something that made my stomach turn. Agents removed what appeared to be a gold cross necklace from around the man's neck. But instead of putting it into an evidence bag or securing it with his belongings, I watched one agent hand it to another agent, who then put it directly into his own pocket like a souvenir.
