I see two things going on: 1) Like blogosphere coverage 25 years ago, the NYT seem miffed that he isn’t relying on their pretty openly racist metro reporters to get messages out; 2) Mamdani is a model for how Democrats can evade hostile media gatekeeping to engage more effectively with voters.

Re: Brubaker, Ellis, etc. Good work is good work. I don't feel duped for having bought and enjoyed good stories. HOWEVER, good work is not unique. And let it be known that producing good work does not allow for bad behavior. It is also not a shield that will prevent someone from kicking your ass.

I have ~so many~ dice in so many shapes and sizes. I adore many of them, but when pressed to chose dice for an actual game... I go back to plastic dice with rounded corners every time.

Plastic dice with rounded corners consistently deliver satisfying rolls. They do so on sub optimal surfaces. They're light enough to roll without damaging a table. They'll roll on leather as easily as wood. BUT they don't say "I spent $100 on this", and they don't look good on social media.

That die with a tiny scene of a cottage or a library or a mountain inside of it? Gorgeous... and probably not well balanced. That solid copper die? Or gemstone? Or liquid core? Beautiful! But they roll like crap. It's a matter of momentum. A good die is light enough to roll on many surfaces.

I need to share a take that could launch a few fireballs my way: Plastic dice with rounded corners are the best dice. ~Aesthetically~ your metal, sharp-edged resin, gemstone, or liquid core may be superior. They're better works of ~art~ but they're not better ~dice~.

Oh goodness gracious. This post on /r/malelivingspace, and then the post directly under it... I have to laugh, but DAMN.

Int he background behind the text is a photo of a bedroom clearly decorated by a man. It's neat, pretty clean, but yikes is it in poor taste. Grey and black striped bedspread. A wallmounted assault rifle above the headboard, an american flag above that. To the left is a black-and-white "don't tread on me" serpant flag. To the right is a couple of christian crosses (that look like they're probably KKK symbols of of some sort).

The only sign of any life or kindness in this room is a fairly large and well-maintained fish tank. I can't help but think how much nicer the room would be if the decorator had focused on that as the centerpiece rather than trying to compensate for their own sense of inadequacy.

Old news to art students, but I've just discovered Edward John Poynter and his stuff is absolutely captivating. Complete master of light and shadow.

The Ides of March by Edward John Poynter. Two figures stand in a grand roman entryway framed by marble columns looking out a sky on the cusp of either dawn or night with the barest hint of sunlight on the horizon. Through the clouds above, framed likewise by the columns, is a prominent shooting star. Both figures wear roman robes and the room is decorated in a baroque roman style (one that we now know is more accurate than the austere white marble we once associated with Rome). The scene is dark and gives the impression of stillness in the small hours of a day. Most illumination comes from a small lamp on the left side, which casts a long shadow of a roman bust on the wall behind it. The mastery of light and shadow is complete. You could believe you were looking at a photograph rather than an oil painting.

Wow, I just read a Robert E Howard story for the first time and I do not care for that man's writing. I see some of the spark that launched Conan into an ever-franchise (the mix of pulp fantasy with cosmic horror), but so much else of his writing is honestly awful.
