An etching titled "Mountain Village Number 1" (1992) by renowned Japanese printmaker Tanaka Ryohei.
The monochrome print captures a cluster of traditional thatched-roof farmhouses (kayabuki) nestled tightly into a steep, heavily forested hillside. Tanaka’s signature technical mastery is on full display here, utilizing exceptionally fine, dense line work and aquatint shading to create a rich tapestry of textures that brings the rustic scene to life with stunning clarity and depth.

The composition is cleverly structured and given a sense of layered intimacy by two prominent, textured tree trunks that rise vertically in the immediate foreground, slicing through the scene like natural pillars. These trunks, with their deeply grooved, rough bark rendered in high-contrast detail, frame the staggered rooftops behind them and pull the viewer directly into the secluded mountain landscape. Tucked behind the dense foliage of low-hanging pine boughs are five distinct gabled roofs, their massive, thatched surfaces rendered with millions of microscopic, hair-like strokes that perfectly mimic the heavy, organic quality of weathered straw.

While most of the structures are enveloped by the surrounding wilderness, a central farmhouse stands out, revealing an elegant gable wall featuring traditional timber framing, clean plasterwork, and a neatly tiled lower roofline. The background climbs steeply toward the top of the frame, composed of a dark, velvety forest where individual leaves and shadowed branches blend into a soft, pointillist sea of deep charcoal tones.

The strangest thing happened today. We went to the uninhabited island of Lunga, west of Mull, to look at the puffins nesting there. I was just taking photos when I felt a thump as something landed quite heavily in my head. It was a puffin! It stayed for about a minute before flying off.
A man with his back to the camera, wearing a blue jacket and a grey woolen hat. A puffin is sitting on top of his head. On the left, an arm holding a mobile phone can be seen. In the background, a green slope and the sea beyond. In this photo the puffin is taking off.

For the last three years in Devon, I’ve been learning how to ring the bells in our local church tower. But the tower is cracking, and we’re going to have to sell off our lovely bells unless we can pay to fix the tower 😭 Can you help us, with even a fiver? 🙏 www.gofundme.com/f/save-bovey...
Save Bovey Bells: we need your help!
Bells have been ringing out over Bovey Tracey for more than 500 years, and we don’t want to be the generation that lost our bells.

The steel girders that hold up the bells are badly corroded and putting pressure on the tower walls, which are cracking. This problem will only get worse!
We need to remove the bells and their heavy frame, replace the girders with modern galvanised steel, then reinstall the bells and their frame.

We need to raise £125,000 to repair the tower. The ringers themselves have already raised about £60,000 and need to find the other £65,000.

Here’s a link to give, and if you can boost your donation with Gift Aid, that will add 25p to every £1 from you!

Met a friend in King’s Lynn and was swept into their world of the local arts scene: filmed a dance routine in the cathedral, attended a meeting with historians, heard church tea ladies being scolded. “Can you stop the tea cup banging, please. This dance calls for silence, not silence with tea cups”
A man and a woman, dressed in medieval garb, on hobby horses. Three elderly volunteers in the cathedral, making up sandwiches in a still incense heavy pillar of hot summer light.

#Poetry #BlueskyPoetry #NoKings #PercyByssheShelley Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley
I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Some context to the Iranian boat that was targeted by US off Sri Lanka coast Former Indian FM: “US was aware of the Iranian ship's presence in the exercise to which the US navy was invited but withdrew from participation at the last minute”
Kanwal Sibal @KanwalSibal • 6h
X
The Iranian ship will not be where it was if we had not invited it to talk part in our Milan exercise.
We were the hosts.
I am told that as per protocol for this exercise ships cannot carry any ammunition. It was defenceless.
The Iranian naval personnel had paraded before our president.
The attack by the US submarine was
premeditated as the US was aware of the Iranian ship's presence in the exercise to which the US navy was invited but withdrew from participation at the last minute, presumably with this operation in mind.
The US has ignored India's sensitivities as the ship was in these waters because of India's invitation.
We are far from politically or militarily responsible for the US attack.
Our"responsibility" is at a moral and human plane.
A word of condolence by the Indian Navy ( after political clearance) at the loss of lives of those who were our invitees and saluted our president would be in order.
