once again, I can't recommend @locquest.bsky.social highly enough, folks. The thoughtful, probing questions by their translators ... have made the writing better, I'm not kidding. We have this big Q&A spreadsheet with them, and it's a record of me saying ... good point, maybe I should learn English

Awhile back my team translated a game demo, and if it did well the full game would be made. And we've recently heard that it's going ahead. The dev had tons of praise for our translation because the players loved it. Most important feedback? Players loved that it clearly *wasn't* AI translation.

Happy 40th anniversary to the Legend of Zelda series! Want to know more about the English localizations of these games and who brought them to us? Here's a thread! Starting with Dan Owsen, who worked on Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, and Ocarina of Time.

A friend talked about a mobile game he was playing that had weird translation issues. That got me to thinking about what the cause of those issues could be, and considering the wider question of how many factors can influence a translation before even considering an individual translator's merits. 🧵

It's not just lack of context, either - people wouldn't believe the amount of content that gets pushed from translation straight to production, no editing step or LQA whatsoever!

Translators seldom have access to the dev builds of the games they work on. About 95% of the time, we get (at best) a couple of screenshots and a few paragraphs explaining the concept. The rest is just rawdogging Excel files and a million queries

I recently completed a LQA project that had me bawling like a baby (for like, good, narrative-related reasons), and it reminded me just how much I love this job. So, so incredibly lucky to still be able to do this, despite the depressing state of the industry. I'll never take it for granted.

Appreciate that this touches on how awful MTPE (machine translation post-editing) is, and glad that there are still some companies who refuse to use it. Also, reminder that contractors are far more likely to get shafted in the credits, either being reduced to a company name or nothing at all.

Should you localize your game? 🤔 Choosing a market for localization feels kind of like playing Russian (or Spanish, Chinese, Arabic…) Roulette. The good news? 🗞️ There’s an easier, more cost-effective way forward: localizing your Steam store page. Read more: locquest.com/localizing-s...
How localizing your steam page increases visibility. A short summary of our longer blog post.According to steam, you should be localizing your store page. This slide includes a screenshot from Valve’s talk at GDC Festival of Gaming Conference in 2025 where they show that over 66% of users have languages other than English set as their primary language on Steam. The other screenshot is from Steamworks documentation on Visibility, saying that Steam is more likely to show your game to players that speak a language supported by your game. The languages to prioritise for max impact include: Simplified Chinese, Russian, Spanish (Spain & LatAm), Portuguese (Brazil), German, French, Korean, and Japanese. How the smart devs are doing it. Step 1: Localizing store page into multiple languages. Step 2: Growing & evaluating wishlist data. Step 3: Deciding on languages for full loc.

Thing is, there's absolutely nothing preventing malicious actors from "cheating" (in case of translation, I guess it could refer to copy/pasting whatever output DeepL spits out), regardless they're using a standalone app or a web platform. It's purely control for the sake of control.

Good for you! But 99% of translators are paid per unit (mostly source words), and we're bound to whatever (usually garbage) tools are picked by the client or their middlemen, so we don't have that luxury :(

It's not just dictating which version of the editor you're using, either - Changing the tagging? Segmentation? Adding/removing TBs/TMs? Everything's locked behind PM accounts. No thanks, I'd much rather have full control over my workflow.

The loc industry has a genuine issue with infantilizing its users. At the end of the day, CAT tools are glorified text editors - Why would I ever need the approval of my PM to use the most basic of features?

Imagine being a designer, opening Photoshop, trying to add a layer or rasterize a picture, and getting hit with a warning: "You can't do that without the approval of your superior". This is what some CAT tool providers are doing. (Original screenshot by Andy Tang)
