Awhile back my team translated a game demo, and if it did well the full game would be made. And we've recently heard that it's going ahead. The dev had tons of praise for our translation because the players loved it. Most important feedback? Players loved that it clearly *wasn't* AI translation.

Translating games has almost nothing in common with translating books. - Nothing is linear - You often get the texts in disarray - Different UIs, menus & dialog styles = different contexts - Sometimes you don't even know which character's line you're translating

Okay, after all the new cycles about GTA6 I've been trying to avoid commenting on, I've watched the latest trailers and I kinda feel I have to say something, so I've been collecting some thoughts while out walking about the state of gaming generally. This might be a long thread so bare with me.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗗𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀? by @bscotch.net is a game filled with puns and silly boss fights. A great foe you might encounter is a robotic ram called the G.O.A.T, a brilliant name... that only works in English. A little investigation on how our teams translated it into 4 different languages!👇️ 🤓 🐐 #gameloc

In Latin American Spanish: "Cabrón".
Literally means "big goat."
Colloquially, cabrón is slang for "dude" and can be used both as an insult or as a term of endearment for close ones.
An extremely fitting double entendre!

In German: "Rammbock".
"Bock" means "ram". "Rammbock" means "battering ram."
So, literally... A "Bock" that rams you. As there was no idiomatic expression with "goat" in DE to play with, our team chose to go for a straightforward pun that also lets you know what'll happen to you during the fight!

In Brazilian Portuguese: "Cabra da Peste".
"Cabra" means goat. "Da peste" literally would mean "plague", but the whole idiom is "Cabra da Peste", meaning someone who's fearless and brave. A clever use of an actual expression!

In French: "Cyber-Biquette".
No pun here, just a shift in humor: "Cyber" came from the sprite of the character itself, since it is a robotic goat.
"Biquette" is a colloquial, cute (and kind of obsolete) word for goat. The final name is fun, silly and accurately descriptive!
