Assuming force generation will keep up. Where are the replacements for XVIII Airborne corps after they fight for 30 days in LSCO? The LA Maneuvers were only possible because of a peacetime mobilization beginning in 1939.

Not a dig! Just observing that 4th gen fighters and 70s defense projects in general have had an incredibly long service lives. Also, realized from this the max takeoff weight of an F-15 is 2,000lb heavier than a B-17.

The only issue is letting your rater be surprised you brought something up to your senior rater. But if they know, staff at any level shouldn't be getting in the way of commanders

I just don't see it as useful when people say "Joe Biden wasn't left wing enough" they mean "Joe Biden didn't support the single issue I care most about in the way I wanted him to". Add in negative partisanship, and folks who would've burnt tires in Seattle '99 are lamenting the end of free trade

It really just shows how increasingly useless "left", "right" and"center" are today. In 1985, which direction and which party would a pro-protectionism, NATO-skeptic, pro-market interventionist belong? French Revolutionary-era political distinctions are no longer really helpful

I would argue that this is among the most important monographs one can read to get a grip on the numerous obstacles encountered by the army in raising, training, and deploying its divisions in WW2. LTC Wiley was quite candid with his assessments. cgsc.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/coll...

If you can't endure the positional fight, you're not going to get a chance at breakthrough and exploitation.
120
Luke @loadsabot.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
Similarly, the breakthrough and exploitation ends at the Siegfried line. The Allies nearly exceed their operational reach and have to grind through tough terrain and enemy defenses again. Only after the Germans make a last throw of the dice at the Bulge does the opportunity again come for maneuver.
120
Luke @loadsabot.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
The problem of focusing only on D-Day then Operation Cobra is that it ignores the attritional, positional battle that makes Cobra possible. It wasn't that the Allies were too inexperienced to do combined arms until Cobra. The terrain and enemy did not allow for operational maneuver.

The problem is who gets reflagged? There are a lot less squadrons than 2 years ago 3/4ID switching to stryker also gets rid of one of the oldest armor regiments. It's not a war on history, it's just an overall loss of armor and cav units
140
Luke @loadsabot.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
Still plenty of buffalo soldiers: 1,4, and 6-9CAV are still in 1CD, and 1-24IN in Alaska. This change is because the transition to SBCT from ABCT loses the CAV SQDN. They also will reflag 2x AR BNs to IN

Units sometimes try to go outside the boundaries the scenario and have to be pushed back. You need "The Box" and boundaries within it to give the operations some kind of sense, and get after the training tasks desired. Without it, NTC would just be 10 days of movement to contact and reconstitution

Exercise design forces them to use certain areas and seize certain objectives, which also allows the smaller OPFOR to mass effects. This is all so that the BDE trains what the DIV CG wants.
120
Luke @loadsabot.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Since we're talking about NTC, it's worth noting that anyone who wants a training exercise to be totally free play isn't a serious person. No BDE CDR would willing move his entire force thru the easily defended couple hundred meters of Whale Gap into the shooting gallery of Siberia
