For what its worth, Goldberg had what he called a "half-baked idea" about buying Greenland in 2021, but has been consistent in the last year that its not worth blowing up NATO and our national honor. thedispatch.com/article/dona...
We should acknowledge the truth of this. Put aside questions of law, the Constitution, or policy. It’s true we could take Greenland militarily, gangster style. It’s also true that I can take a gun and rob my friends. Again, legality aside, the question I have is, “Would that be honorable?” In Trump’s terms, the seizure of Greenland would make us more “respected,” but it would not make us more honored. We would be betraying our allies (and ideals), and not just Denmark but all of NATO, by breaking our word. For what? Territory. Territory we have every right to use by treaty already. Would we be prouder of our military once it became an instrument of mercenary conquest?

St. Augustine once asked, "Justice being taken away, then, what are kingdoms but great robberies?” George Washington was passionate about notions of honor and virtue. In his Farewell Address, he insisted that we should honor our commitments “with perfect good faith.”

An America that honors its commitments has allies who will honor theirs. An America that betrays its commitments by force or by the threat of force will find the cost of political capital exorbitantly expensive at the earliest opportunity.

I think this is great weakness of Boyd - he basically was a guy with a slide deck, not a historian or (rigorous) theorist. Maybe in his 90 min brief he described how the principle of Schwerpunkt was used in 1945 Manchuria, but it's not really apparent in most published versions of the slides.

A lot of people just read the first part of the book and skipped the "Last Man" part
Excerpt from Fukuyama's "The End of History and the Last Man": But supposing that the w o r l d has become "filled up," so to
speak, with liberal democracies, such that there exist no tyranny
and oppression w o r t h y of the n a m e against which to struggle?
Experience suggests that if men cannot struggle on behalf of a
j u s t cause because that j u s t cause was victorious in an earlier gen
eration, then they will struggle against the j u s t cause. T h e y will
struggle f o r the sake of struggle. T h e y will struggle, in other
words, out of a certain boredom: f o r they cannot imagine living in
a w o r ld without struggle. A n d if the greater part of the world in
which they live is characterized by peaceful and prosperous liberal
democracy, then they will struggle against that peace and prosperity, and against democracy.

The whole article is wild, but this quote was the most revealing to me. The man has no reason to exist beyond just existing. A society organized around merely existing as "the highest virtue" sounds incredibly shallow and dystopic.
Excerpt: Embedded in existence....it will be conditioned that existence itself is the highest virtue

The cost ratio still doesn't work, but MPAT-Air has been around awhile, and the new AMP round (should?) work better for air targets. "Wall of Steel" isn't exactly a new TTP for air threats

"For most American officers, the dominance of highly mobile and lightly armed infantry was simply a principle of warfare..." It's interesting that Pershing saw the adaptations the Brits and French had made since 1914, and still believed in the superiority of American "open warfare"

Started "Real Soldiering" and a couple things really interest me: 1. No one knows they are an interwar Army. There only are post war armies juggling new responsibilities with post war cuts. 2. Post-war, the Army has always struggled to recruit and service has usually been seen as a low status job

Started "To the End of the Earth", and was reminded how warped our popular memory of the Pacific is. Some islands were "Hell in a Small Place," but Leyte, Luzon, Okinawa took multiple US Army corps. It's not a huge stretch to imagine the Army's role in an INDOPACOM conflict, we've already done it.
